That chaingun isn't any more legal than pot in -any- state....and it's a whole lot less legal in states that have decriminalized or legalized. That's the sort of fantasy shit that poisons any chance at effective policy, not any fact of the matter, but the perception itself.

I could get a permit to grow pot cheaper than I can get a permit for a SAW, and I can either cheaper than a permit to own a chaingun......and my state is an open carry state, about as permissive as they come......

The shooter didn't use an assault rifle.  Case in point. It was a bushmaster carbine. Go ahead, look it up, educate yourself. An assault rifle ban would not be applicable to such a carbine, and a carbine ban would not be applicable to assault rifles.
