Sergeant Schultz (John Banner) and Corpral LeBeau (Robert Clary) from the late 60's TV sitcom Hogans Heroes (based on allied prisoners held captive in a German P.O.W camp for those that don't know) were actual prisoners in Nazi concentration camps during WW2 and lost most of their families in these camps.

On April 3rd 1856, lightning struck the church of St John on Rhodes, which was being used by the town as a storm shelter. It blew up a forgotten cache of gunpowder in the vault.
The resulting explosion is thought to have killed almost 4,000 people. Not the act of a compassionate God.
