In the long run you are right Stimbo, the vast majority does not for fill there promises. Once in a great while a candid like Sanders does appear which would be a combo of J.F.K and F.D.R.

Actually I've got a far more basic and legitimate reason for not voting. I'm sorry, I'm being mischievous.

Ordinarily I never miss a chance to exercise my vote. A lot of people died to give me that right; the least I can do is to honour it.

It's more of hassle to vote, if they could get a internet voting system working it would be better. I hate having get dressed and waste gas to do stuff, as does a lot of people. I'd like to vote by mail to avoid having to out to the polling places, to many damn people around. On the plus though, the internet voting system would get a lot more voters. It should be a simple process, make a voting account online then vote. You be done 10 min's or less, a person would not have to request time off from to vote. He or she could do it on there lunch brake.

Well, that all depends on where Tibs lives.  If he lives in a swing state, then yeah, they need to get out to vote. If they live in a solidly blue state, they should probably still go vote, to make sure it stays blue, but it probably won't matter.  If the live in a solidly red state, then they might as well stay home and do something useful with their time, because their vote won't be counted.

So really only votes in like 4 or 5 stouts count for shit, when voting for President (this does not apply for congressional elections, in that case there is a whole different set f riged rules).

But if everyone thought like that, no one would vote except for people from those 4 or 5 swing states, and then your vote would count. See what I mean?

Personally, I have voted in every presidential election since I was old enough to do so. I even spent about 2 hours sorting fliers at a campaign office for Obama in 2004. In that same year, on that other atheist forums, I heatedly promoted the "every vote counts" idea, citing governor Kitzhaber's reelection by a mere 8000 some votes. I said pretty much the same thing you just did, that it's a good thing people do bother to vote! And I still intend to vote, me myself, but I feel like I have become a lot more jaded about politics, the democratic party, how the presidential elections work, and what I can realistically expect out of any politician in the last 8 years.

I hope Bernie Sanders is our next president, but ultimately, my vote in my currently blue state of Oregon is meaningless and I'm pretty much only going to bother because:
A) We are allowed to vote by mail, no long lines for us!
And
B) I want to set a more optimistic tone about civic duty for my daughter, who is finally old enough to be somewhat interested in an election. Let her get jaded when she is old, like me! Lol.

While I completely empathise with that and can't deny I've felt that way more often than not, I have to say that I do find it really irresponsible. You get one chance every few years to exercise the only real power that you have over those in executive authority, the one thing that all politicians fear, and people find all sorts of excuses for why they can't be bothered. I'm sure there are genuine hardships for many people, which things like postal voting was brought in to alleviate; but generally anyone who makes some lame excuse not to bother are making themselves part of the problem they tend to complain about, instead of part of the solution. Like I said earlier, the right to vote wasn't granted by a beneficent government, it was won for us by people who died in the pursuit of achieving it. Fuck the JC story - these people were genuine martyrs.

Sorry if I come across as über passionate about this. It's something I do feel very strongly about. There's actually a lot I edited out, so as not to sound crazier than I actually am.
