If we had evolved from the gorilla, then the gorilla would not exist today. The same with any modern-day creature - they are all cousins to each other, sharing with those which are most similar their common and extinct ancestors. They are extinct not because they never had offspring, but because their offspring survived only by being different than their parents, because their fight for survival was in different conditions than what their parents had to deal with. Those which exist today went their own direction, and stronger apes are the now the result, while others from now-extinct ape species moved in our direction.
