atheist math question

atheist math question
help me with this. atheists in America make up 3% of the population (apx).
73% of Americans say they are christian with 62% saying they are affiliated with a church. (from what seems to be a non biased source). Other sources say at least 27% are fundamental Christians at that.
Now from what I am to understand Christians don't like the Roe vrs wade decision. (abortion)
they don't like the decision made in the Obergefell v. Hodges case. (gay marriage)
They probably are not happy with the Engel v. Vitale case either. (prayer in public school)
The group called freedom from religion foundation fights to keep the seperation of church and state all over the country. They seem to be doing a good job of it too. I'm sure the Christians aren't happy about that either.
As far as I know none of this is any concern of the big corperations and so their all too heavy vote doesn't really matter in these issues.
Why is it that with from such a small percentage of the population of atheists the Christians (and muslims in other countries) work so hard to fight against it? Have you ever been to a Christian book store? There is no shortage of volume on indoctrination, tips for arguing abortion, or ways to spread the word in your community.
Most people want to believe that we have a "special" purpose. Most folks want to believe in an after life. Most people want to think that we are more than just a lucky set of accidents.
By my math they should be able to crush the atheists like insects. Why doesn't this happen? What makes atheism strong enough to take on the giant?

What makes atheism strong enough to take on the giant?

The First Amendment to your Constitution.  In other words, the rule of secular law (and most Yanks don't realize how lucky you are to have that).

Agreed.

Also, just googled, and 22.8% of US is "religious unaffiliated" and 21% have no religion (3% athiest, 5% agnostic) so there is probably a larger number then the 3% you site, they just don't self label that way.

For some context 12.6% of the US is black, 2.2% is Jewish and they both have some powerful lobbies. If anything it's more surprising that the "no religion" crowd doesn't pull more weight as a minority. Apathy would be my guess.

I think most US christian people say they are christian but in their heart are manly secular. Its only the die hards that actually take what the religion actually says seriously.

The point I was trying to make and I think downbeatplumb also pointed out is that the math might not be as it appears. Seeing as how only 27% are "fundamentalist" christians, and 21% have no religion but don't self identify as "atheist" or "agnostic".

But not the same church.  Most churchies hate other churchies who go to different churches.

Frankly, it is the only thing that keeps the motherfuckers bearable.  Look how shitty things are in Saudi Arabia or Iran where one cult predominates.

RE: atheist math question
I'm sure some of it has to do with fundamentalists who are loud, but not a majority of Christians who are not and are often quite secular. It is fundamentalists and some parts of the Catholic Church that feel under attack. I don't think your average christian does.

78,000 schisms can do that to a movement.
