RE: Right to Die

I think everyone has a right to die but everyone has an even bigger right to have their mentally well self identified as their true selves more than their mentally unwell suicidal self.
The way I see it, a person is more than their present wishes. If I was severely mentally ill and suicidal now my present wish would be to die, but my wish a few weeks or months later after I recovered would be completely different.
It's only with hopeless mentally ill or physically terminally ill cases where I would support a right to die.
I used to think otherwise but I changed my mind, and I will admit that is partly due to the fact that if I'd got what I wanted when I was suicidally depressed in the past I wouldn't be here today. I am very grateful that not only my suicide attempt failed but other people saved me from myself to prevent me from doing it again.

I live in Oregon. We have a right to die law in place. It was written stringently for fear greedy relatives would talk rich grandma into suicide or temporarily depressed patients would kill themselves. Either the the really really works, or those fears were unfounded. The typical doctor assisted suicide, is a white male in his 50s with a very dehabilitating, but not immediately terminal illness. His motivation has less to do with pain and more to do with not injuring his family financially and not otherwise being a burden. His relatives generally don't agree with him.
I think anyone who wants to and is capable has every right to end their own life. I don't think doctors should be required to help people end their lives for the good of others, particularly not if the others don't want them to.
I wouldn't change Oregon law on this issue (doctors are not required to participate ). But I think the idea of suicide for others should be counciled against.

Anyone who commits suicide should get the death penalty.

Don't want to come off negatively but it's that persons own right to end their life
with or without counseling they shouldn't be stopped from doing it. Were all human
and to deny someone their own right to their own death is wrong for one because
terminally ill people don't exactly have that option in some places they have to suffer.
Then there are those who are suffering with other issues as well we as people
cannot deny them of that. But i will say yes they are free to do what they want.
But i would hope they would get counseling.

Well, I'm just grateful that I wasn't allowed to die because I would have ruined the greatest years of my life by preventing them from existing.
We are more than our present desires. I am a lot more than the decision I want to make in the moment -- especially when in that moment I am not necessarily in a rational, healthy or sane form of mind.

I want to make the distinction between being "allowed" to commit suicide and going to a medical facility that would help you end your life. What a lot of people are saying is that if you want to end your life, it should be legal--no matter what the reason--for a medical facility to prescribe you the requisite drugs, and maybe even if they denied you this, they would be violating your bodily autonomy.
I believe you have the right to die, but facilities/doctors should have the right to refuse.
Should a person have to be 18 before they can legally make the decision to kill themselves? Do they need parental permission?
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great
