Severe asceticism is not a good reason to believe somebody, and that is not the definition of theology; theology is merely the study of religious belief. I know you don't want to hear this...again...but if he doesn't have evidence, there is no reason to believe him when he talks about god, suffering, or anything else of that nature. The sincerity of his belief, as conveyed through his ascetic practices, is still not a good reason to believe him. Until there is a good reason, he just sounds like a crazy person who has Stockholm Syndrome toward his imaginary friend.
