I'm not sure why we mostly get whack jobs. My guess is that the more secure and reasonable theists wouldn't generally feel the need to burst in and preach to a load of atheists. So it's kind of self selecting. It's the more aggressive types that see atheists as a threat to be stomped on that seem to turn up.

Not all are like this, though. We've had several nice theists. But they're the minority.

I've wondered about the "what came first" before, and I think that generally, they both happened together. In most cases, people will have been indoctrinated and taught the bigotry as part and parcel. Maybe it will also mess with their mental health and push them over the edge if they were already vulnerable.
