It's the holdover from our puritan roots. Conservatives by nature want to conserve the status quo at all costs, and much of the status quo in the past was made by a religious group that thinks sex should be regulated to heterosexual couples making babies within marriage. People will push abstinence only education, despite it being proven to not work. They expect people to marry for life without knowing if their sexually compatible, and act like adultery is about the worst thing ever, aside from rape.
