Wow. Firstly - as you said, the life of a defenceless boy was in danger. The Gorilla had already dragged him quite violently from where he fell to another area. Secondly - how the fuck do you know better than the zoo staff in how to respond to an emergency situation with one of their animals and a child? Thirdly, as already noted, tranquillisers were not an option.
And let me say I also disagree with those blaming the parents. WTF? The Zoo are the ones who should ensure their environment is safe for visitors, not the visitors.

I've never been a parent, never will be. But if that had been my child in the gorilla enclosure, I would have supported shooting that fucking ape to bits.
And - just to nit pick - Tarzan was not raised by gorillas, but by the Mangani.

One of the handlers was saying that Harambe was agitated before that, and had been squashing melons with his bare hands.
It should not have been possible for a toddler to get in that area. Ultimately it was the zoos fault.

Agreed! But - at fault of what exactly? They protected their visitors so ultimately they did their job to the best of their abilities. I think this is what people forget- there is a hierarchy of priorities and the safety of visitors is at the top, the comport and safety of enclosed animals is below that. I'm personally please to see they didn't have a hierarchy that put human safety lower.

And at the same time, I'd hope the zoo will sue your guts. It's called supervision. I've been to the zoo numerous times when I was a kid and that being the 60ies, fences weren't even there in places. I was fascinated by a gator in a pond. Just a wall with a low rail. My parents were the ones making sure, I didn't climb in with him.

Well... here is a subject that suddenly got people talking...
As for me, I've been to the zoo a bunch of times with my kids and I know how to keep them away from any danger that they may do to themselves... stupid kids will be stupid!
That said, it's a matter of time until something like this happens in a place that is open to the public, so... better safety measures should be in place to account for stupid kids. Sure, those may detract from enjoying the wildlife... but it's better than what happened here.
Concerning the poor animal... well.... I don't know... If it was my kid, I'd be glad they shot him, of course. Since it wasn't my kid, I get emotional distance and see one less individual of a threatened species, for the sake of a stoopid hooman... not sure the trade-off was a positive one.
Ok, tranquilizers were off the menu, but.... how about gorilla grade tasers?! There seem to be bear-grade ones...
