I don't think they feel anything at all. But I'd rather not abuse one, just in case. I am not a fan of kids who kick pigeons in the street either, but I reassure myself that they probably can't feel anything.

Why on earth do you think that?

Because I don't think chickens are sentient.

I think they are. It's pretty evident. Why do you disagree, Hammy? What qualifies as sentience in your book?

That's just a restatement of what you already wrote.
I take it you're not an 'animal person'.

I'm pretty sure we've known for a while now that birds feel physical pain just like mammals do.

CIJS:
I'm pretty sure that all living things feel some sort of pain. Plants most certainly do. To say that something like a chicken, doesn't feel pain, is absurd.

I'm not sold on plants, though. Is there any evidence that plants can feel?

I would say it's all relative, there's no arbitrary point at which some "feelings" or "experiences" pop up. As humans, I think we often tend to apply our own standards and viewpoints very broadly, and as such dismiss other things by definition.

I'm pretty sure there is, but let me do some research on it. My daughter tells me this is what she learned in science class, so I'll look into it.
