Voltaire on Islam

RE: Voltaire on Islam
(June 16, 2016 at 11:12 am)Homeless Nutter Wrote: The excerpt I quoted is from a letter, not a publication. It's difficult to say, if Voltaire could have said nothing about islam - the OP, despite providing the same quote 3 times, didn't find it prudent to include any context, so I guess we'll never know.
That's why we exist, to provide the context between us the op didn't.  I think, though, that the context was probably "I agree with this guy".

Quote:The relevance is, that OP chose one particular opinion of Voltaire, in order to create another fear-mongering sh*t-and-run thread about islam. Voltaire was pretty vitriolic about all religions, so choosing his quote in order to malign islam in particular is dishonest, to say the least. If there was an attempt at a discussion in the OP, rather than just the quote over and over - I probably wouldn't mind. Alas - there isn't.
We're having a discussion about this in another thread.  Allow me to suggest that the OP is not required to smear all religions at all times...and failure to do so is not dishonesty, or any other shitty thing you'd rather discuss.  Besides...I;m here now, and I;m nothing if not efficient at smearing all religions- so we can fill that void real quick if you think that needs to be done as a sort of disclaimer to the quoted bit from Voltaire.

Quote:I don't know - have black Africans changed since Gandhi's times? I mean - for all I know, they might be living in "nakedness", trying to get cows, in order to exchange them for wives.
Seems so, but I doubt ghandi's opinion would have (nor do I think they were rooted in any factual appraisal of africans as people in the first place). Voltaires opinion of islam..otoh......-is- factual and islam hasn't changed in those regards. We hear, constantly, that islam hasn't changed a jot or a tittle...that it can't...it's the final word and allahs protecting the book or some such silly shit....from muslims.

Let's make lemonade, you feel me?
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

That's a given. I still could use some more details, like the source and the date of the publication. I must say though - I wouldn't expect that from OP, having seen his previous threads.

I don't expect any of that. Quite frankly - I don't expect much from the OP, other than his usual shtick. I would quite like a point, however. And failing to see one - I treated the thread as a trolling one, or at least one that's entirely dedicated to pushing an agenda. I mean, we got it - islam is bad. I still don't see what this quote from Voltaire repeated a bunch of times brings to the discussion. Like we didn't know, that Europeans hated Turks and Arabs throughout history?

RE: Voltaire on Islam
Is that why you think Voltaire said what he said about the ideology of islam?  Because he hated turks and arabs..or because europeans did?  If not, what's the relevance?

RE: Voltaire on Islam
Voltaire?

This stinky, racist piece of shit is your hero ?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientific...m#Voltaire

Quote:Voltaire (1694-1778) was a French Enlightenment writer, historian and philosopher. He was a polygenist: one who believed that each race had separate origins. Voltaire found biblical monogenism laughable, as he expressed:
Quote:It is a serious question among them whether the Africans are descended from monkeys or whether the monkeys come from them. Our wise men have said that man was created in the image of God. Now here is a lovely image of the Divine Maker: a flat and black nose with little or hardly any intelligence. A time will doubtless come when these animals will know how to cultivate the land well, beautify their houses and gardens, and know the paths of the stars: one needs time for everything.[17]
When comparing Caucasians to Negroes, Voltaire compared them to different breeds of dog:
Quote:The Negro race is a species of men different from ours as the breed of spaniels is from that of greyhounds. The mucous membrane, or network, which Nature has spread between the muscles and the skin, is white in us and black or copper-colored in them.[18]

Maybe it tells your truth, OP?
Your racist mentality?

You actually compare this garbage, to a Islam that said:

Sura 49
( 13 )   O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.

Dog. Racist trash

Okay, he was a dog, racist trash..... glad we've got that worked out?

Now, was he wrong about islam?

RE: Voltaire on Islam
Why should I give three shits what someone three hundred years ago thought about Islam? I'm perfectly capable of formulating my own opinioin. This strikes me as a fallacious appeal to authority. Implicit in the OP is, you should detest Muslims because Voltaire did.

Voltaire also said:

Quote:Christian: A good-natured, simple fellow; a true lamb of the fold, who, in the innocence of his heart, persuades himself that he firmly believes unbelievable things that his priests have told him to believe, especially those he cannot even imagine. Consequently, he is convinced that three x's make fifteen, that God was made man, that he was hanged and rose to life again, that priests cannot lie, and that all who do not believe in priests will be damned without remission.
-- Voltaire

Perhaps it would be more proper to say that he simply despised religion.  And in that I agree with him completely.
