To be fair, my first experience of them wasn't great... it just gave me RSI (but which I have a history of so pretty much anything can Sad ). Its screen was really unresponsive which might have been a contributing factor as well as the general awkwardness to hold, but I was glad that it came rooted and doubt that would be the case with the more expensive, branded models? But if I could get a rooted one with a responsive screen... just as responsive as my phone... I might consider it if it had a decent battery life. Any recommendations for a cheap and cheerful first (proper) tablet anybody?

Nah, not Amazon... I don't want to be locked into their (crappy) ecosystem. That's the one promise I made to myself was never to get a Kindle Fire, even though I'd kind of like one from a technical point of view. I've got a normal Kindle and that's fine because I'm happy being locked in to Kindle books, but the Amazon appstore is shite, so I couldn't justify getting a Fire as a replacement Kindle if I'd be using it as a tablet as well... it would just drive me insane.

Ideal would be one designed for e-reading - like a Kindle Fire - but with access to the Play store so I could install my other e-reading apps; Google Books, Nook, Bluefire... and therefore have my entire e-book collection on one device tailored to e-reading. Because I wouldn't read a book on a normal tablet/phone/laptop unless I absolutely had to and do really appreciate the ease on the eyes of a Kindle. But it would be better than a normal Kindle in the sense of responsiveness and having a touch screen... easier to make notes etc. So that's basically the main thing I'd want a tablet for if I was to get one.
