You know, I would agree. Unfortunately, we don;t get to make that choice...whether or not we have universal healthcare we -do- end up paying each others healthcare costs. Beyond the simple social and fiscal reality of that..that's -exactly- how health insurance, for profit..works to begin with. One of those moments where I understand the ideological objection, and share it...but I can't for the life of me see how it applies.

And for the life of me, I can't fathom why just because I don't share certain views, that I become the target of name calling, character attacks, and ad hom BS, on a "free-thinkers" forum. Fascinating, and very revealing.

We've got a whole political party like that. They want to be racist assholes but think they should be called "patriots" instead of racist assholes.

I've just come to the opinion that the normative statement we both agree to, in this instance, has no real world application. I'm open to ways in which that statement could be given real world applications, if, for no other reason, than to see ways in which reality might be made to conform with our normative position.

Honest answer: I think it lines politicians pockets with money that's supposed to be for medical care.
I'm not talking about "insurance". I'm talking about paying for my own medical costs.
Like if I go to the ER I don't pay $1,000 per hour for the room, to subsidize the failed insurance system. I pay a fair rate per hour plus legitimate costs for MY visit. If I run up a $10,000 tab, I pay the $10,000.

I'm not sure what a fair rate is. Either we pay what they ask, someone (or many someones) pay what they ask, the doctors have to work for free....or we don't get care. We're sort of bound in on all sides, don't you think? Insurance (where we all pay in and what they ask comes out) arose as a response to the increasing cost of healthcare...the point at which it became apparent that none of us could afford treatment. What's the alternative?
