Art in the garden/ Garden as Art
There are a couple of people in my neighborhood who take this to a whole other level, Marsha Donahue and Keela Meadows.  There are many artistic gardeners but these two are really gardening artists.  Both were educated as artists and took that into gardens because they love those too.  This post is about Keela Meadows' garden in Albany, California and was inspired by coming across this post online.  It really has a lot of just fantastic photos of her home and gardens.

I've visited here numerous times and every time I do my camera(phone) is constantly in my hand.  Here are a couple of photos I've taken.  If you're intrigued by these, open the quirkyberkeley blog for a much more comprehensive look around.

Her plant combinations can really be electric.

But she is probably better known for the artwork she creates for gardens ..

.. and for her pots.

I like that house.
I like arty people's houses with little things here and there that you might not even notice til your second visit.

Looks like it could be a set to "The Wizard of Oz".  Have you seen this one?

You and me both.  Frankly, I don't think I'd want to live there and I'd never be drawn to make such a garden myself.  (Needless to say, nor would I have the talent to.)  But I find I can appreciate a wide variety of gardens and hers is especially easy to love.

. . .

The one I posted is somewhat famous.  It was the subject of a 1 hour TV show.

Stephen King put a topiary garden in The Shining. Movie company too cheap to do that on the screen, so they did a maze instead. Topiary is excellent, years to execute the big ones.

Seriously?  So this set never got used in the movie, right?

Topiary can be impressive.  I've seen some but never tried doing any myself.  Even a little more impressive, I think, is what they can do with grafting.  There is an amusement park called Gilroy Gardens, south of San Jose, which houses what are known as the Circus trees.
(Not my photos.)

Nope, just the maze. The topiary animals came to life in the book. That would have been cool to watch, if they did it right.
