I'd expand that to "counter-balance"
They are both fields in motion. Mentation is projective outwards while emotions are receptive inwards. Where the interaction is harmonious they pass through each other and there is no cognitive dissonance.
Po-tay-to, po-tah-to. I've long understood balance as a process, not a place, mentally and emotionally. Adding "counter-" to it adds no real information for me; it's just a slightly different way of saying the same thing.
As for the directions of each process, we'll have to agree to disagree -- mentality can also be rumination and introspection, and emotionality can certainly be projected outwards, in my experiences. What you said sounds Deep(ak), but doesn't reflect the way things are with people, so far as I've seen.
