Go check the regs, state by state.  Federal law applies to all and is more involved than "a clean record", but it doesn't end there.  You really don;t understand the breadth of the question you're asking.  We (as in americans) fucking love writing laws.  We've been at it pretty hard for a long time.  The subject of guns didn't escape our efforts.

Federally
-Stupid cant buy a gun.
-Crazy cant buy a gun.
-Criminal cant buy a gun.
-Incompetent can't buy a gun.

State by state, it varies...and this isn't even close to exhaustive...

Non violent probationers can't buy a gun.
Minors cant buy a gun.
Debtors of the court can't buy a gun.
Those involved in domestic violence disputes (not convicted, mind you, merely accused and in process) cannot buy a gun.
Some guns are illegal.
Some guns are only legal for some people.
Some guns are only legal at some time.
Some guns are only legal for some purpose.
Some guns are only legal with specific license.
Some with specific storage requirements.

Then we have interesting overlap.
None are legal unsecured...not a single one, anywhere in the us, federally or by state.

The reason why I'm askling is, I could walk into my school mates shop and obtain a long weapon at my leisure as long as my criminal record turns up clean. For a handgun I need to take a psychological test, which, as I said, can be repeated as many times as I like.

They banned pump actions and automatics because these were the weapons of choice for bank robbers in the late 80ies, early 90ies.

It seems to me that the second amendment supercedes state law in many instances. I realize that New York and various other states are harder on weapon ownership than others. But the numbers still speak for itself. Nearly as many guns as their are citizens. In my case it's 1:10.

In some states you can get a long gun at will so long as you have a clean record.  Though which long guns you can and can't get, and what you can and cant use them for varies.  Here, I can buy a gun on the street from anyone selling it, in full view of the public and police.  We actually have a county/state semi-holiday dedicated to it.  Court Day.  In california, you have to submit an application to the doj and then wait at least ten days for their approval before the transfer of the firearm can legally be accomplished.

No state law can run afoul of a constitutional right, but the status of that right itself is not such as the world and many anti-gun nuts believe.  We do now and have always barred a significant portion of our public from purchasing or possessing firearms and simultaneously severely limited their lawful use.  These laws exist and have survived constitutional challenges time and time again.  It's something we do.

The numbers do, though, speak for themselves. Most guns are concentrated into relatively few hands (people who own more than one gun)...americans aren't all or even mostly gun toting cowboys..some of us are just armed to the fucking teeth, spiking the stats..and those guys are overwhelmingly -not- criminals nor do their guns find their way into the hands of criminals, nor do their guns end up shooting somebody with any statistical relevance. The sheer number of guns in an area correlates -negatively- to crime in an area. The areas with the greatest density of guns and gun owners have the -lowest- rates of gun crime. The areas where relatively few guns excist and are traded as an underworld commodity (one gun for many crimes, many perpetrators) are the most impoverished, and moist riddled with drug war activity. So you tell me, what do the numbers suggest our gun problem is?

Bank heists are a dying art.  Mostly just smash and grabs from transport trucks by transport truck employees anymore, over hur (otoh, it;s always been that way - just used to be more in-bank hostage business on top of it to fap about).  The weapon of choice being a cell phone, lol.

I don't lament the decline in bank robberies. The lost art of the train robbery, on the other hand . . . those were the days!
