Death Penalty Vote
#21
RE: Death Penalty Vote
If a person is

-Fiscally liberal and socially liberal, they are a liberal
-Fiscally conservative and socially conservative, they are a conservative
-Fiscally conservative and socially liberal, they are a libertarian
-Fiscally liberal and socially conservative, they don't really have a name

The fourth is where I sort of fall. I'm fiscally liberal and socially moderately conservative. I guess I just like a lot of rules. I'm sort of inclined to keep the death penalty, but I'm not sure what that means from a practical standpoint because it's so rarely used in many/most states. I find it morbidly amusing in a wild west kind of way that Washington state and New Hampshire still have death by hanging as an option.

Thanks for the responses. I didn't see anything new that I hadn't previously considered.

A vote for a Libertarian is a vote against the death penalty.

I'm from Texas so you should already know my answer.

I'm for killing them. Why should someone get to live if they took a life?

I'm not talking about accidents (even drunk driving would be an accident since they didn't mean to kill someone) or gossip or just because he was found guilty. I'm talking guilty without a doubt, multiple witnessed it or it is on film. DNA or such that confirms the person killed. (because too many times people have been wrong so it needs to be 100% proven)

100% is a metric you're not going to get from our courts. We're certainly nowhere near at present.

You know.....that's the ancillary premise of Minority Report?  OFC, the story of Minority Report is that any system can be gamed. Your 100% is someone else's conspiracy to frame someone for murder.

If they did. 4 to 5 percent of people getting off death row because they were found innocent later on doesn't seem a very high number on it's surface. But how many don't get off because noone gives a shit investigating their case? And what chance are you willing to take that you may be at the receiving end of judicial error at some point?

All my objections have been covered. I still have a tendency to say "yes" for a couple of crimes, but I recognize that as an emotional urge, which has no place in making or carrying out laws and penalties, to my mind.

I don't even have that kind of emotional tendency. I get emotional in saying that I would probably torture and kill someone hurting my loved ones. And I get emotional in excusing someone who actually does just that.

But I find it obscene that authorities resort to revenge killings as a form of justice. But on the other hand I'm honest enough to myself that no crime, if it isn't close to home, strikes any emotional cord with me. It's just another helping of news, and I have to say I'm that overfed with horrible things happening in this world to feel emotional about any of them.

I can think of many people who deserve to be killed, BUT, what happens when you convict the wrong person? If someone is jailed and found to be innocent then damages and compensation can be paid, but if you killed them, what then?

So to you, capital punishment is about revenge.
