I think it's stupid to say "If we only went by popular vote, then candidates would only care about those in the cities and not everybody else."
This recent election is all you need to see that's not necessarily the case. Hillary did exceptionally well in urban areas but was still outvoted in many states, and last I saw only had about 700,000 more of the popular vote than Trump had. That's not really a lot in a country of 300 million people. Had a million more eligible voters come out to vote for Trump in the rural areas, he would have won the popular vote, too.
The simple fact is that the Clinton campaign tended to ignore the rural white vote and got trounced for it. It could easily happen again regardless of whether we use an electoral college or go by popular vote.
