Never go against a Sicilian when death is on the line.
Even if the open windows of science at first make us shiver after the cozy indoor warmth of traditional humanizing myths, in the end the fresh air brings vigor, and the great spaces have a splendor of their own - Bertrand Russell

Never leave evidence or witnesses.

Playing Cluedo with my mum while I was at Uni:

"You did WHAT?  With WHO?  WHERE???"

Only smash yourself in the face if you're asleep and it's only in a dream.

This.

The nice people in your life will tell you, "Oh that sounds great" the more compassionate ones will say "Wow good for you good luck!" The people who really love may even help you achieve your dream but very few will fully support you and believe in you.
“Love is the only bow on Life’s dark cloud. It is the morning and the evening star. It shines upon the babe, and sheds its radiance on the quiet tomb. It is the mother of art, inspirer of poet, patriot and philosopher.

It is the air and light of every heart – builder of every home, kindler of every fire on every hearth. It was the first to dream of immortality. It fills the world with melody – for music is the voice of love.

Love is the magician, the enchanter, that changes worthless things to Joy, and makes royal kings and queens of common clay. It is the perfume of that wondrous flower, the heart, and without that sacred passion, that divine swoon, we are less than beasts; but with it, earth is heaven, and we are gods.” - Robert. G. Ingersoll

Those who truly love you will love you for you and they will define your happiness as what you want rather than what they want for you.

The person who says "I just wanted you to be happy" and their definition of happiness is what they wanted for you... does not truly love you. They feel sad because they are disappointed in themselves only for their own inability to succsessfuly prevent you from behaving in a way that didn't disappoint them so much. They feel like it's your job to be a friend to them but rather than being a friend to you back they act like your savoir. They're like the Christian who says they love you but only really wants to save you from your "sins" to demonstrate their superiority. They're analogous to that even if they're an atheist.

The person who says "I just wanted you to be happy" because they feel sad because they feel disappointed in themselves for disappointing you... for failing as a friend... that person truly loves you and cares about you. Rather than wanting what they personally think is best for you as if they somehow get to decide when they don't they instead want you to be genuinely happy and have what you want for yourself. They may have behaved like someone who wasn't a friend but in their heart they recognize that... hence their feeling they disappointed you and their genuinely having wanted what's best for you. They're like the very loving and lovable character Lenny in Of Mice and Men who truly loves and cares about people but hugs them to death.

Life is confusing and sometimes the only way to make it feel slightly less confusing is to learn to live with the confusion.
