Any Musical Theater Lovers Here?
December 30, 2016 at 8:10 pm
Well, I'll make it short. I love musical theater. It's basically one of those things that keeps me going, and I hope to make it a profession one day. I'm just curious if anyone else here likes musicals, and if so, what are some of your favorites? I know I'm a pretty rare breed...
My top ones (right now)
Dear Evan Hansen
Hamilton
Seussical
25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee
My Favorite Year

The classics:
Fiddler on The Roof
Guys and Dolls
Finnian's Rainbow (the film was a disaster)
42nd Street
Camelot
Sweet Charity
Paint Your Wagon
Man of la Mancha
Several others, but the above are my go-tos.

Hmm I'm not a musical theater lover but I do greatly appreciate the soundtracks to some musicals. My favorites are Fiddler on the Roof, Guys and Dolls, and Godspell (in that order, I think). I'll also always have a special place in my heart for Hair; that original soundtrack got me through high school.

Don't worry, my friend. If this be the end, then so shall it be.

Mostly classics as well, though I'm a fan of of the more recent Wicked, as well.
My Fair Lady
Man of La Mancha
Fiddler on the Roof
Phantom of the Opera
Jesus Christ, Superstar. Yeah, I know, but it's quite irreverent.
Evita
The King and I
Leslie Miserable
Camelot
Tons more I'm sure I'm forgetting, but I own the soundtrack to these, and a few of the movie versions as well. I've seen most in live as well.
I want to take my daughter to see Cats sometime.

I liked seeing Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat at the high school in Brattleboro, VT in the mid-90's. Great fun, but it's not an art form I've really sought out. Great Gatsby will be done in ballet form here in San Diego in April '17. a musical form would seem to be a good thing, too.

I've got quite a few, and here are some sorted by category:
(Not counting: Musical films whose Broadway incarnations I am unfamiliar with, so Beauty and the Beast et al are not here)
Favorite Musicals I've seen live:
- Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson
- Book of Mormon
- Cabaret
- Chicago
- Full Monty
- Gentlemen's Guide to Love and Murder
- How to Succeed in Music Without Really Trying
- Little Night Music
- Little Shop of Horror
- Spamalot
- Sunday in the Park With George
- Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
Favorite Musicals I've seen in film but not live:
- Avenue Q (From an audience recording I once downloaded online)
- Company
- Gypsy
- Hairspray
- Hedwig and the Angry Inch
- H.M.S. Pinafore
- Into the Woods (both the Broadway video and the 2014 film)
- King and I
- Les Miserables
- Mikado
- Music Man
- My Fair Lady
- Oklahoma (Had such an impression on me that I once wrote a story reviewing a booklength "fanfic" that basically devolves into a full-fledged war between Judd and Curly and characters from several other musicals, with one scene where Judd's side fucks a bear)'
- On the Town
- Pirates of Penzance
- Rent
- Rocky Horror Picture Show
- 1776
- Sound of Music
- West Side Story
Favorite Musicals I only know from the cast recordings:
- Assassins
- Fantasticks (Yes, I've seen the film, but it does its source material such injustice I don't even count it)
- Hamilton
- Matilda
- Once
- Promises, Promises
- Spring Awakening
- Visit
For the record, this list does not include musicals I A) know only from films that had to be radically retooled to become theater pieces [and not the other way around], B) I haven't seen or heard in donkeys' years and thus are less fresh in my mind than the others, C) I haven't seen or heard at all, D) Honestly don't like that much in comparison with the others.

I don't like the usual Musical theater stuff, but Chicago was nice.
