I wonder how many Christians actually hold their balls when giving 'testimony'.

Or hold each others.

Sure, it's not as big as it is in the US but it is still fairly popular in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Is it!

On a smaller scale, I've had to put up with Christians who visit this board without - clearly - having read the rules first.

Sorry you went through all that but at least you lived to the tell the tale and started a nice life in New Zealand, right?

As non-religious folk, we welcome everyone, religious or not.

Quote:Within Christianity we have what we call testimonies and that is our story, of how we were converted, and what events in our life lead up to our conversion.

Please understand that many of us have come from religious backgrounds. We know all too well about the "testimonies" and other assorted brainwashings.

Quote:I would like to ask for negative experiences you guys have had with Christians. I'm toying around with writing a book on how Atheists are treated by Christians.

Good luck with the book, but I think you're going to miss out on the actual perspective of what atheism is because you're still biased for your religion. And that's okay. I just don't think you could accurately write a book without first removing your bias towards god.

Quote:I've thought about this problem for a long time. Organized religion has always had people within the Church who treat you guys, and well everyone else for that matter badly. I had a experience with it. There was a young women in our Church who believed/was (she was) Bi-sexual, she dressed in that kinda gothic look they go for. And one of the ladies in the church took out a handful of dimes threw them to her feet and called her a dime hore.

That wasn't your experience. That experience belonged to the young lady who was treated with ignorance by a so-called "christian". I certainly hope that you stood up for that young lady, since you could see that the other church member was doing something wrong, and helped out, rather than sit on the sidelines and watch. That's the problem with Christianity. People wanna pray about things - rather than actually get involved when they see someone being hurt or harmed by another. Prayer doesn't do shit except for make the person praying, feel better for thinking they did something.

What you could do, if this sort of thing bothers you that much, since you recognize there is a problem - be the voice in your religion that helps make the change for how your people treat those who don't believe the same as them.

Quote:And to be honest im not sure if I will follow through with the book. But if you are interested I would like to hear what you have to say.

Then why bother? Let me guess... this is going to be your one and only post in this forum. I'd tell you to introduce yourself in the introduction subforum, but you couldn't be arsed enough to actually read the rules, so I'll save my breath.

RE: Request from a Christian.
OP, do you think that all of us were cast out or driven away? That if the church would have only loved and accepted us more that we would still be believers?

For some, that may be part of the story. For myself, it was that the story the church and my parents presented for belief just stopped working. There was to much fantasy, to much magic, to many contradictions, killing, slavery, genocide, manipulation, abuse, fear, false promise, .................

It became clear that christianity (and every other religion) was made by man. I wasn't cast out. I walked away. The carrot no longer had any allure.
I don't have an anger problem, I have an idiot problem.

Yeah, like others are saying, just because I have been treated poorly by Christians, that has nothing to do with why I disbelieve. Actually, most of the poor treatment happened after I was already an atheist.

RE: Request from a Christian.
Just like there are good Christians and bad Christians, there are also good and bad atheists.
The only single thing we have in common is a non belief in god.
Like all thinking individuals, we disagree on lots of other issues like everyone else.

In fact if you must know, we don't really discuss non gods at all amongst ourselves.
It's just boring.
Being generally skeptical, we tend to point out the fallacies and broken logic when theists like to "prove" that their flavour of god is real. The quicker we dispelled the nonsense, the quicker we can get back to other topics.

Welcome, by the way.

Well uhh, about the testimony. I apologise. I wrote it at around three AM ish Last night, went on the rules I must have glanced over the no pasting links rules. I was trying to find a way to create a connection to you guys by providing my testimony and allow a deeper conversation. Thank You to bryan and Jester but this is obviously not the place for this type of conversation. As for my book, it will have nothing to do with theology. I was wanting to write on the topic of how Christians treat atheists. Such as aforementioned families ostracizing when someone turns away from their religion, or sometimes even denomination. I'm sorry if I was not clear about this. And well, exit stage left. Any mods want to close this topic go ahead.

You are welcome to share your experiences here as long as you parttake in the discussion and don't just preach or keep dumping copypasta. In fact, I would encourage you to stick around and offer up your experiences for discussion.
That I have removed the link does not mean that you are not welcome to participate here, I would have done the same if it had been a link to atheist testimonials by a new member.

RE: Request from a Christian.
A while ago, a band of religious nutters made me a little cross. And then got me fucking nailed me to it. Ever since, I've had even more nutters wearing jewellery of the damn thing, going around saying how wonderful it all was and how it's the best thing that ever happened to them. Fucking ambulance chasers. Well it wasn't wonderful, it wasn't amazing, it fucking hurt. Like a bastard. And my balls were itching the whole time. One of those horrible insistent sharp itches, you know? And did any of those wankers offer to scratch them for me? Did they arses.

And pardon me for dying, if that's the best thing that's ever happened to you, the absolute day from fucking hell for me, you really need locking up before you end up doing it to someone else. Oh, and stop spreading rumours about me behind my back. That's just fucking rude. No wonder I'm ignoring the lot of you.

So yeah, you could say I'm a bit pissed off, yeah.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'
