Empathy

Empathy
Heard this on the radio yesterday ( not a direct quote) :

Empathy is feeling the emotions and pain of others. Empathy is exhausting and leads to burn out. The best doctors are not those that feel constant empathy but those that have a passion and joy in caring for others.
God thinks it's fun to confuse primates. Larsen's God!

Agree, but it's not like I really care or anything.

RE: Empathy
My dad was regarded as a very good doctor, and he seems to have very little empathy. He's leaning heavily towards the narcissistic/psycopathic end of the spectrum. He told me once that he only became a doctor because of the respect he'd get for being in that position. If I didn't look so much like my mum I'd think I was adopted.

saw some others with the excessive form of it  in the HIV buddy program and for quite a while, failed to see it in myself.

my physician picked up on it and while he was unaware I was volunteering in that, he could tell something I was doing wasn't agreeing with me (as they say) and advised a change in activity and a prescription for Zoloft

That's why I could never be a doctor or a veterinarian (and also why I can't even as much as step foot in an animal shelter).

It would seriously destroy me.
"Of course, everyone will claim they respect someone who tries to speak the truth, but in reality, this is a rare quality. Most respect those who speak truths they agree with, and their respect for the speaking only extends as far as their realm of personal agreement. It is less common, almost to the point of becoming a saintly virtue, that someone truly respects and loves the truth seeker, even when their conclusions differ wildly."

In med school, MD's get trained to focus more on the illness/condition. This one is the colon cancer, the next one is the diabetic and then we'll go on to the COPD case. They are seen in terms of the disease/treatment. I'm not sue that they could make it with out that sort of detachment.

This does not make them uncaring or unfeeling, just fosters that appearance.

RE: Empathy
Empathy is useless if you can't actually use it to help people.

RE: Empathy
Empathy doesn't help people.

It just allows a person to understand how another person is feeling.

In some ways its a tool.

It's related to "Theory of mind" which describes our ability to not only have ideas, intents, drives, desires, but realize that other people also have ideas, intents, drives, and desires.
