Dumping friends over politics or religion
#41
RE: Dumping friends over politics or religion
It wouldn't be an automatic reason for dumping a friend but it has had a chilling effect in most relationships I have with Trump supporters, especially my sister. There is just a whole lot of inescapable difference over values of great import (to me) between myself and anyone who supports Trump.

For the record, i don't vote. And even if i did i don't see myself voting for either.

No.

Point out a single Clinton supporter among my friends who supports any one of those things and I will defriend them right now. Also please point out where a vote for Clinton means you support any of that. I know quite a few Clinton supporters and not a single one of them stands for any of that.

Meanwhile, I have known quite a few Trump supporters who have voted for him for more vile reasons. I never was friends with them in the first place because they thought those things before Trump was running, so I never had to think about defriending them. Keep in mind that I also said before that I didn't consider a vote for Trump to necessarily be in line with this; I just happen to personally know people who use this reasoning.

Pay attention to the people who are saying that it's about the justification for the vote that defines this boundary and not the vote itself.

Some of them do that, yes, and I wouldn't be friends with those people either. There will always be crazy people on all sides, and I wouldn't support behavior like this from anyone. But for the Clinton voters, I can at least understand the reason, since Trump and his administration is threatening to tear down a lot of good and important elements in their lives, such Obamacare, Planned Parenthood and gay rights.

The difference between the riots and Trump's bullying, is that Trump is in a position of power and privilege, while the rioters are scared and angry people who are at risk of losing fundamental rights. In my book, that still makes Trump worse.

Never implied that it did. Just pointing out that there are evils from both sides not just those that voted for Trump. And there could be many reasons why a person voted for who they did. Hence defriending someone over a vote seems silly to me.

Sure there are evils among both sides. I just don't see how supporting the words out of Clinton's mouth with full understanding of what she's saying as being anywhere near evil. That's not to say that I always like or agree with her, but there's nothing directly vile coming from her. The rioters are asshats acting on their own accord and I can't associate that with Clinton support.

Trump, on the other hand, has said and done some absolutely fucked up shit. If people voted for him while fully agreeing with every word and action he's done, that is deeply concerning to me. That alone would be full justification for me to stop being friends with someone. I just don't think most Trump supporters would actually agree with all of that if they really paid attention. Until they start acting like asshats, I'm not going to toss them out.

RE: Dumping friends over politics or religion
A friend just moved to Phoenix a couple weeks ago. He moved to a neighborhood where he says mostly Mexicans live. He's white. His only other white neighbor offered him a beer and they have been hanging out ever since. He told me that the dude confessed he hates black people. The dude is a racist. The guy refers to Mexicans as "puercos" (pigs) and black people as the N word. My friend then says, "This is so weird. He's such a nice guy, otherwise. He gives treats to my dogs." Mother fucker. Otherwise? He's nice to your dogs, but hateful to humans of color! Fuck you. I can't separate his racism from the rest of himself.

If you can look past a man's racism and the fact that he is a bully, and still think he is fit to be president, you and I do not share the same values and you're not welcome in my home.

No i don't see those that support Clinton as being evil too. Just like there are many i know of who voted Trump and don't support bullying or racism. And yes, until people start acting stupid there is no reason to toss them out.

How do you vote Trump and not support bullying?
