My former Pastor: "You're not accountable to anyone."...

Quote:5) Our lives are GREATLY improving, I bet he wants to live in the dark ages, what an idiot.

Haha really?

How many young people kill themselves in secular 'advanved' countries?
The world is not improving, that is based on wishful thinking...
Its ok to have doubt, just dont let that doubt become the answers.

You dont hate God, you hate the church game.

"God is not what you imagine or what you think you understand. If you understand you have failed." Saint Augustine

Your mind works very simply: you are either trying to find out what are God's laws in order to follow them; or you are trying to outsmart Him. -Martin H. Fischer

It is improving, health wise. We have greatly improved life expectancy. So what if people kill themselves? That's called being deranged, not atheist, no connection other than SOME atheists are most likely deranged.

What does this have to do with anything? People have been killing themselves since there have been people. People in theocracies kill themselves. People in secular countries kill themselves. How is this evidence that the world is not improving?

And you know what? If the world is not improving the fault lies with religious whackos, not atheists. Who blows themselves up in a crowd of strangers? Religious whackos. Who opposes educating young girls? Religious whackos. Who flies planes full of people into buildings full of people? Religious whackos. Who wants to impose harsh laws that are relics of the Bronze Age? Religious whackos. Who stands around holding up signs that say "GOD HATES FAGS!"? Religious whackos. Who is our biggest concern if they obtain nuclear weapons? Religious whackos.

Atheism has done nothing as far as hindering scientific progress, repressing people or committing atrocities. That ball is squarely in religion's court.
Science flies us to the moon and stars. Religion flies us into buildings.

God allowed 200,000 people to die in an earthquake. So what makes you think he cares about YOUR problems?

Best response I have ever seen...

The vast majority of atheists in my local group are ex-Christians. I once asked for a show of hands how many were ex-Christians. Then I asked, "Ok, how many of you, as soon as you lost your faith, went out on a spree of robbery, mayhem and murder?" No hands went up. Only laughter. Nobody loses their morality when they lose their faith.

People who believe that morality can only exist with belief in punishment as a deterrent scare me. Because what they are really saying is that they themself would go nuts if they didn't believe in an external observer.

I am thinking that it cannot be called morality if something good is only done under threat of pain or harm.

How do I answer that objection to my Atheism?? He also said, where are you going to go when "your hear melts down", ie, hard times hit? Finally, he said that morals come from somewhere, and that we are getting worse rather then better, as human beings-presumably without Christianity.

I really would like to know how to answer him.

I take it that he thinks society ceases to exist when god does.

Well said. No one suggest that after WWII the nazis were moral for HAVING to close the camps.
