When the Fire Comes

The Bush administration exploited the post-9/11 rush of patriotism to take America into an unrelated war, then used the initial illusion of success in that war to ram through huge tax cuts for the wealthy.

Bad as that was, however, the consequences if Donald Trump finds himself similarly empowered will be incomparably worse.
We’re only three weeks into the Trump administration, but it’s already clear that any hopes that Mr. Trump and those around him would be even slightly ennobled by the responsibilities of office were foolish. Every day brings further evidence that this is a man who completely conflates the national interest with his personal self-interest, and who has surrounded himself with people who see it the same way. And each day also brings further evidence of his lack of respect for democratic values.

I read Paul Krugman's piece yesterday. The scary part is there most certainly will be an unexpected crisis of some sort to deal with while so-called president Trump is in office. I don't think it will end well, either.

Relax, it won't be. Idealogue that he is, Bannon won't let Trump get into a shooting war with China. The Trumpites want a war they can win easily, preferably some small nation that can be spun as a threat to the US, but known enough to fan the flames of faux patriotism. It should be in the Western hemisphere, to facilitate troop transport and to avoid pissing off the Russians and the Chinese.

A lot of people probably think Iran is escalating with us by launching their ballistic missles for no apparent reason. We violated the nuclear deal by sanctioning them. Why Congress did that I don't know. This was when Obama was president. I almost wonder if Congress is stupid enough to want war with Iran.
