St. Patrick's Day is on Friday, March 17 this year, and it's during LENT !!!!

A popular holiday treat/staple, brisket is also beef, and many observant Catholics buy into the fish on Friday's thing and eschew (other forms of) meat.

Todays' Omaha World Herald notes some dioceses are granting dispensations for parishioners to swap Friday and Saturday for their meat free day, others it's going to be  a no go.

Of course, it is all EXTREMELY silly, Jesus never mentioned brisket or Lent for that matter, so it's a another way for the poohbahs to poobahficate their poobahficantism.

I rather like brisket, although I'm watching my sodium these days.  I might splurge and get the pricey premade pre-sliced stuff at WalMart, just for the fun of it all.

Actually it is a point of catlick dogma for centuries that National Drinking Day is not a part of lent.

Fuck Lent, it's nothing more or less than the enforcement of Catholic guilt.

Fuck St Patrick, he was a troublemaker who should have been drowned at birth (and don't even get me started on Columba and Bridget).

ANY thing which restricts people from eating corned beef whenever the fuck they want is anti-human. Corned beef goooooood.

Not unless you want to hear off-key choral singing, anyroad.

I find the Church's practices on fasting and abstinence during lent to be totally absurd. Did you know that eating meat on a Friday in Lent or not fasting on Good Friday or Ash Wednesday is a mortal sin that will by itself send you to Hell under Catholic teaching? Imagine what that conversation in Hell might be like:

Damned Soul 1: "So What are you in for?"
Damned Soul 2: "Rape and murder primarily, you?"
Damned Soul 1: "Ate a ham sandwich on a Friday in Lent."

And Good Friday gets a little problematic when one realizes scripture records Jesus being crucified the first time on Thursday . . . .
The granting of a pardon is an imputation of guilt, and the acceptance a confession of it.

See, now I'm wanting some crabcakes.

I never have cared for the warm saltlick that is brisket.

And yet, you'll eat a cake made out of the second cousin to a cockroach. To each his own, I suppose.

I'd just like to point out that eating fish is not meat free. What, exactly, do Catholics think fish is made of? rofl.

I'll be enjoying a nice coned beef and cabbage this St. Patties day. We've drastically reduced our animal intake, but we're not skipping the holiday treats!

(p.s. the best fast food fish is Burgerville's. Omg, like crispy fried fish steaks! Fish 'n Chips, sooo good.

Funny, as a kid I used to really enjoy crab, crawfish, and the very occasional lobster.  Now I am utterly grossed out by it all.  Sea bugs, no thanks.
