They had an opponent file on Sanders that was two feet thick. They would have raked him over the coals with the same bullshit lies they pulled on Clinton. And it all would have come down to this.
Which would have been enough for most of the assholes who voted for the WLB to begin with.
I'm not sure what that would be. He consistently votes for and proposes things that would help the American people. Trump couldn't say he's crooked. Opponents have tried to dig up dirt on Bernie's divorce but his ex basically said "We're still friends, leave me alone." He could say he's an extremist, but republicans say that about centrists.
Bernie recently got a crowd in the deep south cheering for single payer healthcare. People under 50 tend to not care that he calls himself a Socialist, and some think it's a good thing.

Bernie couldn't beat Hillary.
And what has Hillary been doing since she lost? Bernie didn't beat her, not because she had better policy, but because the primary was rigged in her favor. There's a difference between those. You know Bernie's gone to town halls, where Trump supporters are, explained his policy, and gotten cheers, right?

In a hypothetical general election Bernie vs. Hillary, I postdict a landslide win for Bernie.

But other people are.

Quote:That’s what a general-election campaign against Sanders would look like—except it would be much, much worse. Republicans would rip Sanders as a big-spending, big-taxing socialist. They have plenty of ammo. They could quote the 2015 letter in which Sanders urged President Obama to “raise revenue” through “executive action.” They could dig up quotes from decades ago, in which Sanders called himself “clearly anti-capitalistic,” complained that U.S. interventions in Latin America “have been for the benefit of large corporations,” and praised communist countries as culturally superior. “Contrast what the young people in China and Cuba are doing for themselves and for their country as compared to the young people in America,” Sanders argued in 1976.

He currently polls as the most popular politician in the country. I honestly think he could weather the assault.

Too many people, especially on the Right, see Socialism as a big bogey man. Too much fear involved. They have neither the understanding nor the knowledge about what Socialism is all about. To me, merging some aspects of Socialism with Capitalism would be better for everyone. Think of what good can be accomplished and has been accomplished: labor unions, Social Security, child labor laws, among other things:

I agree, mixing some socialist policies with some capitalist policies would be the best. You don't need the government in your private lives, but you don't need for profit insurance companies controlling your healthcare either.

Not even a little bit? How about ensuring educational standards for kids?

That's not what I was thinking, regarding private life. I wouldn't even consider education private.

In short, what a democratic socialist - by his own definition - would do. If not even the great depression could stop the American people from fucking itself over definitions, nothing will.
