BTW, I was talking about the size of our army compared to Bulgaria's. Nothing was said about a budget.

Yes, and the threat we face from Canada and Mexico was clearly more severe and unpredictable than those faced by a Bulgaria in the Balkanized balkans, requiring a large land army for our survival.

As a matter of fact, the US had more post WWI vintage battleships in its fleet between the wars than anyone else-3-to Britain and Japan's 2 each, and effectively 0 for everyone else until around 1938.

As to the rest of our poor world I vintages battle fleet, what will it ever do against everyone else's world war I vintage battle fleets?
I'm going to skip your pinball posts. Sorry.

RE: History and were doomed to repeat it
Ok, Rome kicked off (more or less) in the 8th century BCE. Within 300 years, it was dominating central Italy, by 200 BCE it had all of Italy, and another two centuries later it was the dominant power in the Mediterranean basin, much of Europe, and the Near East. This happy (for Rome) state continued for another 400 years. The Byzantine Empire (whose inhabitants never for a moment thought of themselves as anything other than Romans) lasted for roughly another thousand years. So, for more than 2100 years, the Roman Empire was the single most important political force in the Western Hemisphere.

'Suffer the fate of the Roman Empire', me arse. They did pretty damned well, I think.

Clap  The University of Youtube doesn't impart a deep understanding of history.

I suppose, then, that I made the right choice in not going there. Smile

I spent fourteen years at Purdue, taking 1-3 classes a semester. When I went to apply for grad school I had 37 history classes on my list, 1/3 of which were "mixed level", undergrad and grad students in the same room.

On the other hand, the University of Youtube has tried to teach me that FDR sank the US Fleet because Lindbergh was such an effective speaker.  Rolleyes
