A minor solution to America's election process

I honestly think we should simply just get rid of the concept of Party Affiliation with our American politicians. I believe that it would force voters to be more informed on the issues. Some people have told me that this would lead to something such as a one party state. While that argument is understandable, I do think that would not happen.

People running for office should have to win over voters by convincing them they will do what the people desire.

What do you think?

Nope, that would not change a thing. It is about policy and one party is responsible. Dems simply need to stop letting the GOP lie and hold states and federal government hostage. The parties are NOT the same as voters. Our politicians simply cant do shit because of 36 years of gerrymandering and if you look at all three branches the GOP has held on average a majority of control in that time.

Dems voter apathy at the state level in odd and even years in midterms also does not help.

Dems are for better pay for workers, equal pay for women, minority rights, affordable health care and lower pay gap between the top and bottom. What the GOP has done successfully is paint anyone questioning the top earners as nanny state commies.

If as dems we get off our asses and get involved EVERY DAY and every November and think long term  like the GOP does we could win more. If we expand our map too. The GOP uses bullshit fear and falsely claims the left hates the private sector when what we hate are monopolies and abuse of power.

I have no problem calling myself a Democrat, but I do wish my party would stop sucking at the state and local level nationally.

There simply isn't a middle ground to choose from. Sure there are a few smaller parties out there but they lack the money, power, and influence to ever get anywhere in our two party system. The only candidate I had any interest in this election was Bernie, not because I believed in his politics but because he was an actual like able guy. He didn't have this aura of "fakeness" that seemed to be resonating off donald dump and shillary.

The biggest problem vis a vis the US political parties is that they are all shades of hard right, especially when it comes to economics. Yes, the Demcorats do tend towards libertarianism when it comes to what happens in the bedroom (but not the Libertarian party, who essentially are Republitraitor clones), but on economic issues they all sing off the one hymnsheet viz "rob from the poor to feed the rich".

Yes...well, Bernie certainly was upfront about what he intended for the nation. I will give him that.

But...then, so was Barry.

George Washington warned against developing party systems in his farewell address, so this is a centuries old problem we have been getting ourselves into and not one unforeseen by our Founders.

It appears that whoever wins at the ballot box in our federal and state elections, that the establishment members still exert an inordinate amount of control.

No western system is perfect because everything humans do is done by humans.

At this point in history in America the solutions are, more participation by LIBERALS from the local level to the state level every day and every November. The other thing that needs to stop is the GOP gerrymandering and their bullshit cold war scare tactics.

The rich will not end up on cat food if they pay more in taxes. I don't mean mom and pop shops, I mean even the worlds uber billionaires. This is a global problem. Early last year on CSPAN I watched a press conference held in Australia interviewing China's Premier, and he pulled the same economic right bullshit we get from the GOP here, "Now is not the time to tax the rich".

You wont get rid of the private sector, but we can demand that the uber billionaires SHUT THE FUCK UP and stop acting like you are the victims.

What was a party system in 1800 was much different than today's system. Back then the only real party system around was the English Tory*/Whig system, were both groups were much less a coming together of politicians with similar ideologies and goals and more a case of supporting one side then the other in the hopes of winning ever more lucrative bribes off the then Chancellor (the then name for the office of what is now the Prime Minister). That's what Washington was warning against, a systemised selling of offices, peculation and bribery that was current in the UK parliament which the US one was largely modelled on. The modern party system didn't happen until Charles Stewart Parnell invented the whip system to ensure a solid block of votes on every issue from the Nationalist Party in Westminster as a tactic to get support for the various Home Rule Bills from whichever of the Tories or Liberals were in power at that time.

*In fact the name Tory comes from their reputation, being a direct anglicisation of the Irish word "tóraidhe", which was the Middle Irish name for brigand (most commonly applied to highway robbers, similar to the the post Civil War Confederate bushwhackers or Dick Turpin in England)

Sounds sort of like the same thing we have fallen into, though, doesn't it?

Thanks for the information.

A major solution to America's election process: Stop allowing elections to be fucking bought, and publicly fund campaigns.

IE: Overturn that piece of shit known as Citizens United.

Yes, not even close. Selling the tax revenues of the whole of Ireland for a single vote is a lot worse than anything that goes on today.
