Without the Shedding of Blood There is No Remission of Sin

What WERE all those animal sacrifices for, anyway? God liked the smell of burning animal flesh (it's mentioned almost 40 times), sure, but was that all there was to it?

When one finds out he originated as a Canaanite war god, suddenly the sacrifices, and mass killings make more sense.

Though they will tell you it was a lead-up to Jesus' sacrifice. they had to normalize the idea of killing something pure to appease god after sinning, so they'd find Human sacrifice more acceptable.

They were foreshadowing the sacrifice of Jesus.

Like so much of Christian apologetics, it boils down to the end justifying the means.
The god who allows children to be raped out of respect for the free will choice of the rapist, but punishes gay men for engaging in mutually consensual sex couldn't possibly be responsible for an intelligently designed universe.

Smells of retconning . . . .

Huh

That wasn't the original purpose of animal sacrifices.

It foreshadowed the sacrifice of Jesus, which in turn foreshadowed the fact that this "God" guy is a psychopath. Of course this should have been obvious from all the murdering he does. But the author wanted to be exceptionally clear: God is a sociopath incapable of compassion or empathy.

Jesus on the cross contemplating a comparison of being turned into a pleasing odor to waft up to His dad's nostrils is a little bizarre . . .
