I agree with you about his smarmy attitude, but he 100% discusses disagreements with people, that's sort of his thing. He usually has 1 or 2 Republicans on the panel, and he gives it to liberals just about as much as he gives it to Republicans. If you've only seen bits and clips (not saying you have) you might get the same idea about Hitchens or Harris too, without the meat in between they seem pretty egotistical.
I have indeed watched his show. While it's true that he will give an argument chance to breathe, he still exudes a dismissive demeanor all too often for my taste.
I don't like that he thinks the audience should laugh at every joke and he also confuses oohing at a touchy joke with booing. It's true that he laughs at his own jokes.
Other than that I think he has been a much needed voice speaking right to the face of the socially conservative and he has always gone out of his way to get guests on every side of the issues. He is very outspoken and that will always bring a certain amount of criticism but I'm glad to have had him and other outspoken atheist comedians like George Carlin.
Sometimes ridiculous beliefs need to be ridiculed even if it hurts people's feelings.
If god was real he wouldn't need middle men to explain his wants or do his bidding.
