I've heard the tale of why the British take such good care of their gardens.
It seems that, in days past, bees were plentiful. People didn't like it so much when the bees stung, so they planted flowers to keep them busy pollinating and collecting nectar for honey.

Did you take these in England, Poca? I've always liked this flower, Tithonia rotundafolia or Mexican Sunflower. I like the way each flower's stem goes from narrower to wider in such a Dr. Seuss fashion:

Of course the actual flowers are all in the center and the larger orange 'petals' are for flagging in pollinators.
