"Cultural Appropriation"
RE: "Cultural Appropriation"

Why you think that link responds to or contradicts anything I said is beyond me.

Because you insist that everyone sees it the way you do and I showed you that is not the case.

Quote:I'm satisfied with the definition of cultural appropriation.  Refusal of acknowledgement is explicitly laid out in that definition

Nice circular logic you got going there. It's like saying the bible is true because the bible says it's true.
Look, dissatisfaction with that definition is the ENTIRE purpose of this thread. Once again, you see you're definition as the only possible one.

Quote:Yeah, I know..I know, I'm bigoted against bigots.

No, that's not it at all. You're intolerant of different opinions. That fact that you see different opinions as bigoted/racist is what makes you and not them a bigot.

Quote:Do you have anything coherent to add to the discussion of cultural appropriation, or will this be an endless list of the ways that you feel personally slighted by me, a terrible bad bigoted person?

Everything I've said has been coherent. That you disagree with and try to vilify me for it is your bigotry and lack of coherence, not mine.
You started this whole mess with me on a baseless accusation of racism. How's that going? Has it improved the level of discussion to your exacting standards?
If god was real he wouldn't need middle men to explain his wants or do his bidding.

No, Crunchy, I don;t and didn;t.  I insisted only that cultural appropriation had a definition, and that there are examples of it in the actual world.  I explictly acknowledged that not everyone agrees about what is or is not cultural appropriation, or whether or not it's "good™.

Stop, being, wrong...or let it go.

Nice, yet another term which you seem to have some confusion over.  That a lack of acknowledgement is explicitly contained within the definition of cultural appropriation is not circular logic...it's a statement of brute fact.

Yes, yes, again, I know, I'm bigoted against people with not-bigoted™ opinions.  I'm not denying it.  .....? Those poor folks...theyre really good people..they just play bigots on tv, sound like bigots, and broadly agree with the not-bigoted opinions of other not-bigots. Mea culpa..mea....culpa.

Strike three, yet another term you don't understand...coherence.

I dunno.  Trivializing symbols that are meaningful to a subculture is a kind of minimization.  I'm not happy to see Americans wearing Canadian flags when they travel, even though they might think it's a great compliment to hide behind the goodwill other nations have for us.  On a bad day, and on a particularly rude American, I might even pick a fight over it.  Nobody ever sees the hockey fight style coming before it's too late!

That being said though, while I'm sympathetic to Tizheruk, if I see a cute hippy girl wearing a little dreamcatcher, I'm more likely to think "Yum!" than "Culture-appropriating little bitch!"  So while I can see where Tizheruk has a valid complaint, I'm not sure that I need to get SJW about it myself.  I'm mainly glancing around hoping my wife doesn't catch me staring at her. . . "dreamcatcher." Tongue

It's about trivializing the culture, the people, not the symbols themselves.  Christians, for example, have trivialized their own symbols..and it's not accurate to call that cultural appropriation even laying aside that they would be appropriating it from themselves.

Hehehe, the canadian flag thing is just a valid strategy for pleasant travel.  Wink

Tiz is insulted by a misuse of what Tiz feels to be somehow sacred.  We are a secular nation, take a number.  That Tiz has grounds for feeling that slight is unfortunate, and to a great extent an effect of poor relations between america, american culture, and the natives.  I also sympathize, but the issue of dreamcatchers, today, doesn't fit the definition of cultural appropriation any more than white rappers or "black" hairstyles.  They can be the ongoing effects of oppression and inequality..past and current....but, they just aren't an example of a person engaging in what is referred to by the term cultural appropriation. Despite the protestations of the mental midgets in the room..it really is a specific term to refer to a specific relationship and series of events.

BTW, I note Tiz's av is apparently a sea dragon of sorts, and Wiki informs such cryptids are derived from Norse mythology.

I think I smell some cultural appropriation . . . .

My goal this month: get a dream catcher and hang it in my room. It will look nice in there.
I don't believe you. Get over it.

*googles dreamcatcher*

Oh only saw those in movies. What is that supposed to do?I ask this due to my own failure in understanding the OP's idea of what that is, "cultural appropriation". Cultures have literally and figuratively, sex. They are bound to mix and I never saw myself in fear of mixing with anybody, even just for a talk. Perhaps over a hot beverage in winter an a cold one over summer... some snails, for you murricans can have pistachios.

So there is a war to be even fought? Nah.

Tricky question. Insertion onto yourself black how do we know it glows inside? Shrodinger never thought of that one.
