Just found out my stepmother died

She was the first one in the family that I informed about my sexuality when I was in high school. She was very accepting of me and she never told my father.
She died because she was an alcoholic and she wasted away because she would not listen to medical advice to stop drinking.
I am not in contact with my family. My boyfriend has contact with some of them on Facebook. My sister informed him that my stepmother died.
I do not know if I want to attend the funeral or not. I believe I might be able to ignore my father at the funeral, but I honestly do not want to see him. Besides, it will be a religious ceremony, and I am reticent in that respect as well.
After all, must I be there to respect the life and memory of that individual? Absolutely not.

Sounds like you cared for her but that her self destructive vice just made that hard to do. Still, even if she hadn't committed suicide by drinking, given the fact that those who are organizing the event are loathed by you I can can certainly understand why you might decide to skip it. Is there anyone you'd like to connect with about her who will be there who you might be able to get together with separately?
