The authors investigated the role of homosexual arousal in exclusively heterosexual men who admitted negative affect toward homosexual individuals. Participants consisted of a group of homophobic men (n = 35) and a group of nonhomophobic men (n = 29); they were assigned to groups on the basis of their scores on the Index of Homophobia (W. W. Hudson & W. A. Ricketts, 1980). The men were exposed to sexually explicit erotic stimuli consisting of heterosexual, male homosexual, and lesbian videotapes, and changes in penile circumference were monitored. They also completed an Aggression Questionnaire (A. H. Buss & M. Perry, 1992). Both groups exhibited increases in penile circumference to the heterosexual and female homosexual videos. Only the homophobic men showed an increase in penile erection to male homosexual stimuli. The groups did not differ in aggression. Homophobia is apparently associated with homosexual arousal that the homophobic individual is either unaware of or denies.

I think I stopped feeling homophobic before I started making myself 'feel good' on a regular basis. It wasn't even about sex, or religion, or morality for that matter; I just didn't understand much about love (certainly got none from ma) other than an unrealistic ideal about the nuclear model and how children should be part of the equation (since the Leave it to Beaver thing was leaps and bounds better than a single parent household like mine). Like you weren't a complete person or logically capable of loving someone if you or your partner couldn't reproduce and obviously two same-sex partners can't biologically do that (and this was before the advent, or at least wide availability, of in vitro so that wouldn't have come up even in the limited circles I rarely conversed about it in). Now I'm not even sure I want kids after seeing how horrible a time all the people I know who have them are having (granted, most of them are also single moms like mine and her performance, or lack thereof, probably jaded me somewhat toward that demographic). So, many things have changed, some many times. Might also have had something to do with mom not wanting me to turn out gay because of how she knew the rest of the family would feel, but fuck that dumb bitch and the rest of those arseholes and their fairweather beliefs anyway. Never understood why people are so up their own asses about, "But, they're family, you can't just sever ties like that!" If they're lousy enough of human beings, you're better off without them. Not like they could have provided any financial support even if I ever felt like swallowing my pride and asking after. It's kind of funny but my best friend for the last...almost 15 years now, wow, time flies, is gay and it's an amazing experience having that perspective in conversations, stuff you'd never contemplate or know otherwise. Most of my other friends are uncomfortable with the idea of having gay friends and it makes me roll my eyes. But then, my gay friend believes in astralprojection and all sorts of other woo crap (but not gods, for some reason) so nobody's perfect.

There's a distinct possibility that you would not have scored very high on their homophobia assesment.  A kid who doesn't understand something is not a homophobe. A kids who's parents have taught him homophobic thngs is very likely to parrot those things and enforce a normative behavior on himself without actually -being- homophobic, himself.

Nevertheless, whether a parrot or otherwise, those were the opinions I spouted. Out of ignorance, obviously, but when I see the rampant willful ignorance of bible-thumpers on this forum, I can't deny that I was like that from post-elementary school through early puberty (about one particular subject), and if pressed to defend it, which I never really did because it almost never came up, I would probably have been forced to admit I was wrong even earlier; it wasn't something so strongly and unshakably held I would have refused to listen to reason if confronted with it. Luckily I was emancipated from that poisonous thinking before too long (and had rejected the majority of the other shit even earlier). It really fucks with me, how someone that young can figure that shit out and these grown adults are so fucking stunted that they can't even acknowledge how stunted they are. Fucking pathetic.
