The loss of coal jobs and the loss of retail jobs have essentially the same cause - progress.

As coal becomes less and less a viable energy source, so brick-and-mortar shops become less and less attractive to consumers. Kvetching about either of these is akin to building a whale-oil lamp factory, then seeking an injunction against the nearest LED bulb factory.

You are correct but you have also identified the basis of conservatism.  They fear change because change upsets the status quo.  They hate that.  Nonetheless, progress continues so they vote for a dickhead who tells them whatever they want to hear.
