Greetings, Rosie.
The amount of times I hear of trouble over there in the US over religion. Makes me feel fortunate to be in Europe.
Anyway, glad to have you with us.
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence - Carl Sagan
Mankind's intelligence walks hand in hand with it's stupidity.
Being an atheist says nothing about your overall intelligence, it just means you don't believe in god. Atheists can be as bright as any scientist and as stupid as any creationist.
You never really know just how stupid someone is, until you've argued with them.

Welcome
"There ought to be a term that would designate those who actually follow the teachings of Jesus, since the word 'Christian' has been largely divorced from those teachings, and so polluted by fundamentalists that it has come to connote their polar opposite: intolerance, vindictive hatred, and bigotry." -- Philip Stater, Huffington Post

I meant it seems more of a lifestyle than a real belief in anything... your family's beliefs. Sorry if that's off the mark - that's just what I pick up. To me intolerance and denial of choice to anyone is the opposite of what you would think of Christ doing.

Hi and welcome.
I can say that i was lucky not to have faced the same pressure you must be under. The closest I had to conflict with my family was when I told my mum (at about the age of 8 or 9) that I didn't believe in God was her response of "Don't be silly, of course you believe in God". She tends to get all upset when I challenge her over her beliefs so I tend to avoid it basically because she only believes what she was told, she isn't very scientifically minded and cannot mount a real defense of her beliefs.
