Certainly didn't come across that way, at all. More like a sympathizer to the other side. Or someone with battered spouse mentality. Just being honest, that's the vibe I got.

Other side? Didn't know there were any… And I'm sure how my disdain for people who hide their lives away makes me think like a battered woman.

I read it a few times and this is the same conclusion that I have come to. I don't see that this is homophobic, but I do see that it's uncalled for because it's insulting and really, who would actually wish for someone to never have been born simply because they gave a boring speech?

It's no different to the funny joke about everyone wishing Bush senior had pulled out sooner! (with ref: to the Iraq Invasion #1)

Can you reveal now who person a and b were?
"Of course, everyone will claim they respect someone who tries to speak the truth, but in reality, this is a rare quality. Most respect those who speak truths they agree with, and their respect for the speaking only extends as far as their realm of personal agreement. It is less common, almost to the point of becoming a saintly virtue, that someone truly respects and loves the truth seeker, even when their conclusions differ wildly."

Does it really matter?

A google search provided this:

Yeah, that doesn't seem to fit.

Your curiosity, CL, is infectious.

No matter how I tweak the wording, I keep coming up with David Mundell.

The articles on David Mundell, however, do not seem to fit the OP's version, however.

Oh, here it is:

I don't think it's homophobic... it's just a joke. And in any case it's not insulting the gay person, it's insulting the other.

Lutrinae found it, it's Scottish politics. Person A is David Mundell MP, Person B is Oliver Mundell MSP, the Blogger is Wings Over Scotland.

The additional twist to the story is that a prominent politician from a different party called the comment homophobic in her newspaper column and in parliament, and is now being sued for defamation.

The whole thing is causing various dramas in Scottish political discussions. I agree with the vast majority here, it's clearly dickish but not homophobic. I wanted to get a clean reaction from people with no dog in the fight, because everybody fighting about it online for the past week has too many dogs in the fight.

To be honest, while many of those people have called the comment homophobic, none has provided a clearly argued reason for it. I hoped if there was such a case, this would be the place to find it. Astonished's first comment came the closest, and I think he made some very valid points, but still not enough to push it from "hurtful and dickish" to anything actually discriminatory.

Thank you all for your input, it's been very refreshing to hear impartial perspectives.
