I think that rule somewhat conflicts with the idea that the ground can't cause a fumble. He clearly had possession of the ball prior to hitting the ground. When he thrust the ball over the goal line, in a perfect world, he should have been treated as a runner. But the rule isn't written to take into account such subtleties. This has come up before this season, where receivers clearly had possession of the football, but lost possession when they hit the ground. Unfortunately it's hard to see revising the rule as that would lead to a lot of ambiguity and subjective calls.
In other news..... The Packers have been eliminated from playoff contention. Yahoo! I hope the Packers rest Rodgers this Saturday instead of playing him and risking re-injury, but I don't think we'll be that lucky. It seems entirely plausible that Rodgers might want some payback for giving him the broken collarbone in the first place. Regardless, even though the Packers have nothing on the line with Saturday's game, I doubt they'll play that way. It looks to be one of the best games of week 16. I'm just glad we don't have to deal with the Packers this year. I think we can handle Detroit.
