The term has lost all meaning.

I was watching a reality show the other day where a group of Americans are put in a resort in Mexico. One of the guys on the show was wearing a shirt that had little sombreros printed all over it. He was like "I'm in Mexico so I'm wearing my sombreros shirt!" The next day, when I was listening to a podcast where the host (a white girl) was recapping the show, she started going on about how racist the guy was to have made that comment. I mean, really? There are plenty of legitimate instances to call someone a racist (the supremacists in Charlottesville are an extreme testimony to that). When it gets tossed around it loses some of it's ugliness and shock value for the times when it is actually warranted.

Yeah, The word racists really loses all of its ugliness and shock value when someone to call people flying Nazi flags racists.  After all, not one of them has gassed a Jew or built a shower connected to a crematorium.

And which member of kkk Had ever whipped a slave to death?

Your post apparently was offering a faint example, but in support of neo's extraordinary broader claim, given the context, that calling racists racists speaks more ill of the those that call out racists than the racists, and tempt to leverage from that rotten foundation some truly idiotic partisan attack desperate even for his ilk.

I think there are times when the word "racist" gets tossed around, and I gave an example of when I recently heard it get tossed around. Obviously I'm all for calling racists racist.

It is one thing to call a policy position racist, it is another thing to demonstrate that it is so. I think you do a lot of the former and very little of the later. If people want to erect and dismantle monuments via a legal democratic process then so be it. But mobs rioting and pulling down statues is un-American. If like-minded people want to assemble to carry signs and torches and chant about anything at all, including racial supremacy or armed resistance, they have that right. It is called free speech and freedom of assembly. To physically assault people exercising their civil and human rights is un-American. I would go so far as to say that given the nature of their extremely vile ideology they had it coming, but that still doesn't make it any less a violation of their rights to freedom of assembly and freedom of speech.

I agree with almost all of this.

But let's not kid ourselves. The Jim Crow-era Confederate monuments erected throughout the South were not put up as the result of what any right-thinking person would consider legitimate democratic processes -- unless, of course, you are prepared to defend an outdated, blatantly racist understanding of what constitutes "legal democratic processes". Southern blacks sure as hell weren't consulted, and any exercise of their free speech in opposition would have resulted in a gruesome harvest of strange fruit. It was a tool in a campaign of government-backed terror, plain and simple: Niggers, this is our place and don't you ever forget it!

If mobs had been rioting to pull down those statues there wouldn;t be so many of them standing, sweetheart.  Mobs rioting to tear shit down after nazis killed one of their own, on the other hand, is -very- american.  

You;re here bullshitting us about free speech and people assualting each other...remind me who ran over whom, again?  In any case, you and your alt right pals aren;t arguing for free speech, what you want is -consequence- free speech.  There is no such right. Further, the cops aren't shutting you down, and when the conseqwunces of you freely speaking your racist minds leads to violence they protect you.....so there's no point in bitching about your right to free speech. You obviously have it. If you say racist shit, the consequence is being called a racist. If you support racist douchebags, the consequence is social pressure. If somebody hits you in the mouth for spouting off racist shit, they'll go to jail and you'll just have to man up or stop saying racist shit. It's always been your call.

To my knowledge, only one statue was torn down by a mob. And the people who tore the statue down turned themselves in the very next day, with the line of people going around the block. The rest of the statues have been removed by various city and town governments.

And, yeah... I'm generally a non-violent person, but when it comes to Nazis you punch them in the fucking throat.
