United Air Lines Fucks Up Again

I'm no fan of United or airlines in general. And it goes without saying that United has dropped the ball in a major way when it comes to customer care on a number of well publicized occasions. But this one? Meh, I don't see where United should have to own this one.

The woman was bumped from her flight. She was offered a hotel and transportation there and turned it down. She did not call anyone and there is no evidence she made any attempt to contact anyone. This woman had NO BUSINESS traveling alone. The fact that was traveling alone even though she was obviously ill equipped to do so is not the fault of United. Its the fault of the asshole that dropped her off at the airport. An airline, and numerous other service business', do assume a certain amount of liability when they agree to provide their services to a customer. But that doesn't make them responsible for assuming 100% of all responsibility for the customer. You can't just dump a person off with the airline and expect the airline to be their dad and make sure they eat when they're hungry and tie their shoes and don't stay up too late reading comic books.

I don't agree.  I think all the airlines have to start taking responsibility for planning for the transport of their personnel and not just rely on kicking people out of the seats they've paid for based on some microscopic contract detail that is never mentioned.  Seriously they need to be sued big time for this.  At the very least they should be required to tell each and every customer that they reserve the right to take the seat back for their own use for any reason that suits them.  If they buy a ticket online, there should be a separate window on which each customer must sign off on just this point.  Burying it in a long contract is bullshit.

That insulates powerful people and organizations from consequences that would ruin a small business or lower middle class person.
