And then they'll shoot across the borders at each other.

Face it.  Their lives are so fucked up because of their barbaric religion that killing is about the only thing they can look forward to.

What would we expect from dropping the region like a hot potato?

I see comments to the effect that a positive and useful intervention is difficult.  I doubt that anyone, anywhere, thinks otherwise.  It being difficult is not, in and of itself, an argument against intervention.  We have a recent example of what happens when we decide...and largely for reasons of other recent history, not to intervene.  What good or improvement came of that?  The gassings?  The mass migrations and subsequent global humanitarian crisis?  The nationalist waves and trumps of the world?   The resurgence of a criminal russian state in spite of global sanctions?

No thanks.

I'd rather we keep trying and failing than not try at all. Yes, it requires a commitment to the loss of life, and the vast expenditure of resources. It seems to me that such a commitment is required if we would expect to gain any ground over people wholly committed to what we would intervene in. If those guys are willing to give more than we are, ofc the place will get shittier...regardless of whether we're involved or not.

It seems to me that all we have accomplished is to make things infinitely worse and bankrupted ourselves in the process.

That's because you're a pessimist, Min.  Wink

I, however, refuse to give credence to the notion that we shouldn't intervene between people and despots, because people might get hurt...or it might cost us an arm and a leg.  I'm sure that despots, for their part, find this argument very compelling.  In fact, it seems to be their universal MO.  The contention that resistance to them makes us responsible for both what they've done and what they will do to their own people or other people.

You know what a pessimist is?

A pessimist is an optimist who has been paying attention.

Our willingness to intervene and possibly fail at great expense to ourselves is both the cost of doing business and a neccessity of intervening on behalf of others not endowed with what would be required to even -attempt- improvement in their conditions.

I;m not, in this, disputing the failure of a given intervention, or strategy of intervention. No amount of pointing to those things is relevant to my own position on this issue. I can;t see how we -could- successfully intervene if we ignore or intentional omit reference to our failures. I'm simply suggesting that the malaise these failures brings about does not actually support the passive defeatism which it produces. Doing nothing will not improve their future or our own. It is not the solution to the problem of how we've done something the wrong way. It's an attempt to banish our frustrations. They will not go away, even if we do.

No one, but I'm not sure what the relevance is?  We don't have to be the king of anything to try and use what we have...and that others don't...to help them.

Don't get me wrong, we can choose not to intervene....but I think that it's important that we don't offer convenient rationalizations for doing so.  It's not that we can't or couldn't help and that nothing will ever work and that the people of the middle east are fundamentally barbaric.  Maybe we just don't want to anymore.  It's expensive, and really hard.

We're not holding back the red right hand for their own good.  No good can come of watching a government execute it's people, for example.  We're doing it to diminish our own malaise at the expense of whatever good we could have done.
