I can definitely attest to that. So you see, I occupy both sides of the coin.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'

It depends.

If the speeding vehicle is a flimsy little motor tricycle, and I am in a robust and heavy vehicle, I probably would place my vehicle in the path of the speeding motor tricycle.

If the speeding vehicle is a 18 wheel semi, and I am in a econobox, I probably won’t.

I guess I am not ultruistic enough to accept certain death just to save one other life.

But I f by letting myself get run over and very likely die, I think I have a good chance of deflecting the semi from a parked jumbo jet full of people, and I know for a fact majority of them would vote against trump, then I probably will try to do so even if I remembered doing so would likely result in my own death.

If one the other hand, I know most of them will vote for trump, I will even more gladly sacrifice my life by jumping onto the semi and making sure it does not miss.

It's impossible to say, really. Here in this thread we have the luxury of mulling over our potential decision. But in a real life scenario like the one that you give, we would only have seconds or less to "decide". I've been blind-sided by circumstances and had to decide quickly what to do - and then thought later with the benefit of hindsight about how I might have handled things differently.

And what of other real-life variables? Who else is in my vehicle? My kid? Would I kill myself and my kid for someone else's kid? Is killing my kid to save someone else's really altruistic?

Assuming I would have time to jump out of the car so as to not get killed myself -- Yes, I'd give it a try. I can always get another car.

I'd put my pedal to the medal and go into the speeding car. Like bumper cars. But before I hit I'd jump out, and Jesus would catch me and float me safely to the fluffy grass, and car ram rod would save the kid.

Depends on my vehicle. In a car I might.

On my bike, probably not.

In a tank, definitely.

Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

Now there's something few people will tell you honestly. All kids are assholes.

There wouldn't be enough time to think it through and make a decision. So my instincts would take over.

Question is, which instinct would be stronger? My survival instinct to stay put, or my maternal instinct to save a child in danger?

Impossible to say...
"Of course, everyone will claim they respect someone who tries to speak the truth, but in reality, this is a rare quality. Most respect those who speak truths they agree with, and their respect for the speaking only extends as far as their realm of personal agreement. It is less common, almost to the point of becoming a saintly virtue, that someone truly respects and loves the truth seeker, even when their conclusions differ wildly."
