Cognitive dissonance's a bitch, people aren't rational.

Yes; mentioning God rest assures the heart ! This is very well known; you can consider prayer a form of meditation.
Life is harsh and time is short; almost like somebody made it this way so you pray for salvation.

You prefer a comforting delusion to a harsh reality.

I also prefer a comforting delusion but I can't allow myself to believe in it because my rational sense won't let me Huh

Also an imaginary friend doesn't comfort me.

Why waste your life, the only one you know for absolutely certain that you have, pining for some nebulous second life that might not even happen (and which conveniently is inaccessible until after you die)? Where's the harm in trying to make a heaven of this world?
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'

Even if there is a level two to the game of life, what if the criterion for the grand prize is what you did to leave this world better than you found it? Or at least, not measurably worse?

Never mind; I used the wrong isotope of irony.
