Theists, Who would You Rather Have as a Neighbor
#1
Theists, Who would You Rather Have as a Neighbor
A. an atheist who's a nice person and defies everything you've been taught about atheists, but leaves you talking to the walls when you try to bring up god but doesn't question your beliefs.
B. a theist who's philosophy is hey I'm saved by grace. I can do anything I want as long as I repent. He treats people like crap and sics god on them if they don't forgive him.
The god who allows children to be raped out of respect for the free will choice of the rapist, but punishes gay men for engaging in mutually consensual sex couldn't possibly be responsible for an intelligently designed universe.

I may defend your right to free speech, but i won't help you pass out flyers.

Those who can make you believe absurdities, can make you commit atrocities.

You understand that your poll options are not identified in the actual poll and your descriptions are so borked as to be intentionally polarising and that you have intentional left out a swathe of other positions, right?

Absolutely right. I intentionally left out the average atheist or the average theist. For the sake of the question, I only included examples at the outer edges of the bell curve in order to stress the difference between a person's behavior and their religious affiliation (or lack thereof). I could not have done that if I'd been inclusive.

My descriptions were too long for the poll options. That's why I said "see op."

Well, i would answer A except I don't try to bring up God randomely to people, especially if i know they are atheist. I wasn't given any other option, so I can't answer the poll.
"Of course, everyone will claim they respect someone who tries to speak the truth, but in reality, this is a rare quality. Most respect those who speak truths they agree with, and their respect for the speaking only extends as far as their realm of personal agreement. It is less common, almost to the point of becoming a saintly virtue, that someone truly respects and loves the truth seeker, even when their conclusions differ wildly."

I think I could go either way.

If I'm feeling lazy, I would certainly go with the nice atheist neighbor (actually probably lean this way).    Although I haven't really been taught anything about atheists, it's mostly from observation and experience.

On the other hand, the philosophy and attitude of the theist described is certainly not what one desires in a neighbor. Association could (incorrectly) reflect poorly on me; however, isolating and ignoring such things is not a very good solution.  So at other times, I may choose the theist, as there is the possibility of reasoning with them, and correcting the damaging and harmful thinking for the both of us.

I want to find A...as in everything that defies about being Atheist that I have "heard."  If they are uninterested in God unfortunately, their etiquette is masking them from their darkness.  It's like taking all sorts of beautiful features of the light that are beautiful, masking oneself with it, all yet no genuine attachment to the light and it's source and reality.

However if they don't want me to speak about it and are genuinely searching religions and wisdom, and trying to find God through giving him an opportunity to clarify his proofs to them through his chosen ones,  I would not only want them as my neighbour,  I would want them as a friend.

So definitely A.

I doubt most Muslims in the west pray loud and outside. Now having said that, I would not want to live next to a church ringing bells on the half hour and hour, nor a Mosque belting out prayers on a public address system. But I don't think simply having a Muslim as a direct neighbor in the west I'd hear their prayers in an every day residential house.

Holy places I would not want to live next to directly because of traffic and possible noise for events. But I also would not want to live next to a Highschool football field for the same reason.

Point is I've had noisy neighbors in my life, but my objection to them had nothing to do with religion, just their noise. I like quiet neighbors. Right now I do have an asshole neighbor a few houses down who lets his dog bark all day. THAT annoys the shit out of me. I will say this though, he at least does not let the dog do that all night. I think he brings the dog in.

So basically you're asking whether people would rather live next to: 1) an atheist who doesn't act like an atheist or 2) a Christian who doesn't act like a Christian.

You and god need to get a room and get it out of your system.

The good part is because god is fictional all you need is the room and a good imagination.

You seem to be lucky in your association with Christians, because from what I can tell from across the pond, US Christians have a large number of arseholes amongst their ranks.

And that arseholism is specifically justified by their Christianity.
