So unkind to Plato, lol...and I understand his limitations...

Oh come on, the guy wasn't an idiot. He invented the plate.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'

Can you please help LR to understand by showing the evidence that when..................... that brain dies, you will never laugh or love again..... Thanks

I'll break it down Rik-style for ya...

When you die it's like  This Place Is Dead

There's probably no heaven where you get to meet your cat Fluffy that you had when you were six.

Or Hell where you'll meet your gay uncle Jim.
Confused Fall Our mind's find it difficult to conceive of non-consciousness or oblivion, so it's easy to imagine life going on somehow.

Huh  And this may be correct. Ultimately, I'm agnostic about whether there is an afterlife.

Lightbulb But since neuroscientists observerve a causal link between the activity of a living brain  and consciousness experience, it is reasonable to assume that all such conscious experience ceases when brain activity ceases.

Mate.  Hi

How on earth can I compete with your superior mind?  Worship (large)

Impossible.  Banging Head On Desk

All I can do is to ask you for more tips so one day I may become intelligent like you but please help me to understand a little bit more.

1) When you say that......... neuroscientists observerve (observed I guess) a causal link between the activity of a living brain  and consciousness experience...............does really means that the link is permanent?
How do you know that?

2) Talking about neurosurgeons it must come bizarre to you that one of them had an NDE which transformed his life from a skeptical into a strong believer.

3) When you say........... I'm agnostic about whether there is an afterlife.........why then you state that ...............that brain dies, you will never laugh or love again............
Don't you think that is wrong to make statements such as this when you are not 100% sure or have positive evidence to back your statements?  Lightbulb

I was painting a picture, Rik. I'm a philosophy major remember. I'm not 100% sure about anything. But if I said that all the time, my posts would become quite verbose.

If I ever imply certainty in my statements just remember that I might mean I'm 99% sure. My agnosticism on this particular matter is around 1%... hardly worth mentioning.

I did point it out to you when we started delving into the matter, though.

I may on occasion exclude minutiae from my statements to remain concise. Use your head.

I give up, Rik. I've tried again and again to force my materialist dogmas upon you, but you resist my indoctrination each and every time.

You see through the veneer of my posts, realizing how doggedly I try to force my beliefs on others.

Well, I know when I'm beat. You're right. I'm wrong.

The only reasonable conclusion is that there are souls, cosmic energies, and other spooky things floating around all over the place.

Thank you for opening my mind.

Mikey, I'm an avid gamer, but no game I've ever played has properly portrayed atheism.  The closest I can think of are the Xeno games (Xenogears, Xenosaga, Xenoblade) which try to examine what a god could be, and whether or not they're necessary in our lives.

Xenosaga was awesome. One of them (I think the second) had gameplay issues, but the story kept me captivated throughout.

I always get a little sad when people talk about great console RPGs, but never mention a Xeno game. They all have warts of one kind or another, but they also try to actually say something about the human condition, especially with regards to belief, and the actions one takes because of it.

(January 6, 2018 at 11:41 pm)Mikeykitty123 Wrote: Hello everyone, this is Mikey. I am going to talk about Kingdom Hearts and how it corresponds with Atheism.
In Kingdom Hearts, there are creatures known as "Nobodies".
Human beings who have no hearts, or soul. Nobodies are believed to be just certain "accidents" and are nothing but empty husks with no emotion.
If a Nobody gets killed, their body returns to the person they were.

What's that have to do with atheism? Well everything.
Nobodies claim themselves "are not supposed to exist, yet we still do." Nobodies also lack a "heart", or a "soul" as they were treated as in the KH series.

It is kinda similar towards how some atheists believed that life was created by chance and/or there is no such thing as souls or the afterlife.

In KH Dream Drop Distance for 3ds, it is explained that Nobodies DO have hearts. Nobodies have simply evolved and learn to live just like the people who have hearts.
In other words, the hearts grew inside the Nobodies and the Nobodies become their own people.

It is very similar towards atheism, and the scientific theory of evolution. The idea of growing, evolving, into something more than they were.
And the part with how a Nobody returns to their original human form after they die is very similar towards the idea of "reincarnation" where if we die, we would be re-born again.

I hope you guys like my comparision. It is a lot less negative compared to my last post. Leave a comment on what you think. And you all have a great day!

There are no souls.  There is no afterlife.  I sometimes wish that Reincarnation would exist - multiple chances to learn - but it's as illogical as any other concept of the afterlife.
You really need to study evolution until you have some basic understanding of it.  Atheists simply do not believe that any sort of deity exists.  That's all.
Go explain your "nobodies" fantasy to school chums at recess.  Let us know how that goes, k?

It's interesting, at least. Has anyone else read this Kingdom Hearts stuff?
