Why do people here think an increase in the starting wage of the largest employer is meaningless, if not due to partisanship?

Isn't a layoff in underperforming areas and a raise plus bonuses everywhere else better than a layoff in underperforming areas alone?

Please stop. That is what you have bought, not what has to be.

INVESTMENT is what creates jobs, not corporate welfare.

Regulations are what mandated seat belts and eventually air bags, car companies DID NOT go out of business because of those regulations.

AND AGAIN, THE CRAP you have been sold, always gets negated by inflation AND the debt created by corporate welfare.

Sure. This wasn't just an increase though. A lot of people are losing their jobs.

Because it came about at the same time as a massive layoff. You seem to be forgetting that WalMart have increased their wages three times since 2015, y'know, when a Democrat was President. I don't see this as a partisan issue. If this happened under Obama, we'd still be complaining about the layoffs. I don't think the President had anything to do with them.

Sure, but just because their current employees got a wage increase doesn't negate the fact that some employees got laid off. Finding $100 on the street and then getting punched in the face is better than just getting punched in the face, but in both scenarios you still get punched in the face...

What does one have to do with the other?

Why would it make a difference if the layoff came at a different time?

Walmart just got a 2.2b dollar a year tax cut.  They're competing with Target for employees and at the same time big box retail is getting chunked by Amazon.  They announced that they would be shuttering 63 of their stores, where 11k people currently find their employment.  They'll spend 400m on a "bonus" campaign for the remaining employees based on tenure that can be described as nothing more or less than a recruiting tool.  Those that will see bonuses will see the equivalent of a 10$ weekly increase, on average.  That's a 2% increase in the average yearly salary at Walmart accounting for proposed wage increases, which will be effected for those under the new floor but will do nothing for those already above it.  The tax cut will also help to pay for a 22% increase in wages for walmart's ceo...not counting his -actual- bonuses.  The remaining 1.8 billion will be payed out to shareholders.

All of the above is happening within the overall context of walmarts next level welfare queenism. Where they dip into the jar to buy their product, stuff their suppliers with any loss, dip into the jar again to supplement their poverty wages (which will still be poverty wages after the increase), then dip into the jar -again- with their employees on welfare spending their welfare dollars....and again..when the employees spend their walmart dollars at walmart. All the while the tax cut being paid for by we the people.

Trickle down economics at work.

RE: Wal Mart increases starting wage
I worked for Wal-Mart from 2000 to 2008 and was paid $26.19 per-hour non-management. One day we got a yearly bonus of $650.00(they are now quarterly).

I borrowed $65.000.00 from myself to buy a share of a cruise ship(that did not work out). So I picked up my $65K check from the escrow office on my way to work. When I got to work they told me to go pick-up my bonus check. So I went to the back to pick it up. On my way back to my dept, I kept asking every employee I could find, "Did you get the same bonus I got?" I then showed them the 65k check. It was hilarious! I got three proposals of marriage!
My girlfriend thinks I'm a stalker. Well...she's not my girlfriend "yet".

I discovered a new vitamin that fights cancer. I call it ...B9

I also invented a diet pill. It works great but had to quit taking it because of the side effects. Turns out my penis is larger and my hair grew back. And whoa! If you think my hair is nice!

When does size truly matter? When it's TOO big!

I'm currently working on a new pill I call "Destenze". However...now my shoes don't fit.

I don't think 45 or GOP supporters can comprehend simple math. They stupidly take the bait "RAISE" and "BONUS" like a distracted cat playing with a ball of twine.

Quote:Walmart's workers will soon reap the benefits of the recent tax law changes, as the world's largest private employer raises its starting wage, creates new benefits and distributes bonuses to eligible workers.

The big-box retailer announced Thursday it will increase its starting wage rate for hourly employees in the U.S. to $11, and expand maternity and parental leave benefits. Currently, Walmart's starting wage is $9 until workers complete a training program. Then, they receive $10.

Walmart will also pay a one-time cash bonus to eligible employees of as much as $1,000. The payouts, which should total roughly $400 million, will result in a one-time charge that the company will take in its fiscal fourth quarter.

Putting everyone to work at Walmart at $11/hour isn't exactly making America great again.

Oh yeah, that's right nazi, it's because real world examples fuck your worldview up the arse good and hard.

Here's what I like about you Wololo, you're so spectacularly absurd, that the first time I remember interacting with you, I thought you were doing a bit.  That you were playing a caricature of a stereotypical dumb person with no self-awareness, and I laughed at your joke, because I thought the portrayal was dynamite.  Then after a few posts I realized that it wasn't an act at all.  You were just being you, and I got an even bigger laugh at that.  You brought my cold nazi heart a lot of joy.

And even today, I still have the nagging doubts in the back of my mind if you are not just doing a bit, because it's so fucking silly.  The imagery I have of you typing away at the computer calling people nazi's puts a huge smile on my face.  You are everything that is right about everything wrong with the internet.

Anyhoo, I wasn't making a logical argument, it was just mockery.  Mocking the idea that someone takes a very simple number, $1000, and does a bunch of unnecessary math to present it in a way that makes it seem like less than $1000.  It's so silly, I find it funny.  Not as funny as you, but still funny.

Yerra fuck it, I was going to respond to you. But frankly, boy, you're worthless.

I can't remember who I was reading, but, I've heard the subject being conceptualized as an american with a horatio alger dream wants to keep the door to wealth open -at least- until he passes the threshold.

In keeping..I'd suggest that gop supporters are perfectly aware that the poors get the shaft in trickle down theories...but they know that somebody is getting a payout...and they have aspirations to wealth (however remote they may be), to being the guy who gets the 1.8b windfall.  It's an almost cynical response to the inequality they all perceive - in that by abandoning the working poor in favor of the hope of prosperity through corporate welfare they've condemned the state of affairs in their own impoverished lives.

Apparently, working hard for livable wages is not the route to prosperity, the route to prosperity is to give your poverty wages back to your boss. To cut walmart a break and hope a miracle happens. Rich people (and corporations) need to be given -more- money to incentivize them, whereas giving money to the poors just makes us lazy.

Not for nothing...we could have just given that 400m directly to walmart employees and saved 1.8 billion. We could have given -every- walmart employee in the US the average bonus for the relative bargain of 780k. Saving around 1.4 billion. If we distributed the entirety of walmarts 2.2b tax break to all of walmarts employees they would each see three times as much money as the average bonus, and 150% of the maximum bonus that walmart is awarding to a much smaller number of people.
