Babies stir up clouds of bio-gunk when they crawl

Infant and adult inhalation exposure research

Date: January 11, 2018

Source: Purdue University

Summary: When babies crawl, their movement across floors, especially carpeted surfaces, kicks up high levels of dirt, skin cells, bacteria, pollen, and fungal spores, a new study has found. The infants inhale a dose of bio bits in their lungs that is four times (per kilogram of body mass) what an adult would breathe walking across the same floor.

As alarming as that sounds, lead researcher Brandon Boor of Purdue University is quick to add that this isn't necessarily a bad thing.

"We are interested in the biological material an infant inhales, especially during their first year of life when they are crawling. Many studies have shown that inhalation exposure to microbes and allergen-carrying particles in that portion of life plays a significant role in both the development of, and protection from, asthma and allergic diseases," Boor says. "There are studies that have shown that being exposed to a high diversity and concentration of biological materials may reduce the prevalence of asthma and allergies later in life."

Scientists have previously done studies to determine how much dirt and biological material is kicked up and resuspended into the air when an adult walks indoors, but this is the first study to look at what happens with infants and their unique forms of locomotion.

RE: Just one more reason to not spawn.
I'm a few years to old to make (healthy) babies and am not mentally well equipped to be a dad.

I don't need the extra reason that kicking up pollen and dust with their crawling would aggravate my allergies.

edit: NVM It's 40 for guys not early 30's

So technically I would have a good chance to produce healthy children, still bad finances and I'm not fit for it.

Can't guys of any age be healthy sperm donors?

I think when you start to get far past 40 the DNA degrades or something like that.

The probability goes down throughout life. In a man, sperms are produced throughout life. Each generation of sperm is made by cellular division of germ cells that were made during production of previous generation of sperm cells. So with the production of each generation of sperm, possibility of additional error is introduced into the genes carried by that generation. When a man is old, the sperm cells he produces is hundreds of cellular generations removed from the genes he inherited as an fertilized egg during his own conception, and carried with them cumulative errors from gene transcriptions over hundreds of cellular divisions.

So the older the man, the more mutations his sperms will possess and pass on.

It's probably fair to say many more mutations in the human gene pool originated with man's sperm than woman's egg, and a disproportionate number of those originated in elder men's sperm.

Being hyper-protective in desperate attempts to shield little ones from all manners of germs and viruses makes doesn't give them a chance to build up much of an immunity by the time they hit school age. Chances are, they'll catch a new cootie every five minutes the first year of pre-school or kindergarten, resulting in many missed days.

It's difficult to convince many newb helicopter parents that some level of exposure is actually advantageous, though.

I blame acute Purell poisoning; It gets absorbed into their bloodstreams. Fucks with their brains...lol.

"Oh, noooo! Tanner crawled off of the blanket...and onto THE FLOOR!" Panic

I grew up on a farm. We were shit-immune before we started school.  Tongue
