gay adoption

RE: gay adoption
Ruthless logic there, EvF.

As for gay adoption, it seems to me that society in general doesn't dictate in matters like adoption unless the harm to the child is almost inevitable. Any statistical evidence to suggest this for gay adoption is pretty weak, and there's probably stronger evidence for, say, people with an income below £17,000 being bad parents, but noone's suggesting that we stop them from adopting.
'We must respect the other fellow's religion, but only in the sense and to the extent that we respect his theory that his wife is beautiful and his children smart.' H.L. Mencken

'False religion' is the ultimate tautology.

'It is just like man's vanity and impertinence to call an animal dumb because it is dumb to his dull perceptions.' Mark Twain

'I care not much for a man's religion whose dog and cat are not the better for it.' Abraham Lincoln

And if the question was "should anyone be allowed to adopt?" would your answer be the same, or do you think you'd just give a general "yes" since the fact it depends on the skills of the adoptive parents is unmentionably obvious and no less obvious if the parents are homosexual?

No, my answer would not be the same because the question you pose does not imply that a certain group should not be able to adopt simply because they are part of that group. The question you pose seems to ask if anyone should be able to adopt without a screening process, to which I would reply "no." The fact that it should only depend on the skills of the parent is obvious, but when it comes to gay adoption, it is only obvious to those of us who are not under the impression that gays are evil. Because so many people think gays are horrible, the matter is much less obvious, in this context.

RE: gay adoption
To make a comparison that takes the gay part out you would actually have to make the poll ask this question "Adoption - for or against" This poll just says "Gay adoption - for or against"

I agree Shell in that if we look at how it actually is and what people think, The Gay Adoption issue IS different. If we on the other hand change the way people view it by raising consciousness of how they should view it, I don't think my response is completely worthless either.

No, I don't think your response is completely worthless. I just think it would only be fitting in an ideal world. Unfortunately, this ain't it. I could tell people how I think they should view it all day long. I would still get nowhere. Sad

It's not an ideal world but that doesn't mean we shouldn't make statements that try to influence things so as to make the world at least a tiny bit better. In other words, and more specifically: It doesn't mean we shouldn't redefine things if it can help matters if we do so.

We are redefining things. Every person in this forum who believes in equal rights for all has the ability to influence other people in their lives by their actions and words. As time goes on, more and more people will be influenced. We are seeing it now. The world we live in is vastly different than it was fifty years ago, in regard to this matter. It seems like we are making tiny advances to us, but in the grand scheme of things, we are making leaps and bounds. However, as a society, we are not at the point where gay adoption and straight adoption are the same issue. I wish I could say otherwise, but I cannot.

Okay, well if we assume things are indeed already changing for the better, then NOW the goal is to try and encourage things so as they improve even MORE.

Just as just because something can't be perfect it doesn't mean we shouldn't bother we are improving it...Likewise: Just because things are already improving doesn't mean we shouldn't try and make the rate and extent that things improve increase.

I like to draw an analogy with Racism in that.... on the one hand: If ethnic minorities are to be realistic they should expect to receive some Racism in this crappy world that we live. But on the other hand: They should, from an idealistic perspective, expect better and expect equality and equal treatment because of course, all races should be treated equally.
